Do you love genocide, misogyny, and compulsory worship of a brutal and capricious god? Then this is the book for you!

My first thought when reading the thread title - only five?!?!?! Blink

See here they are the bruises some were self-inflicted and some showed up along the way. - JF

I will call him a liar and a dog here and now.

5 things? And how many in the second sentence?

We have enough youth. How about looking for the Fountain of Smart?

RE: Five Stupid Things About the Old Testament
I think it's a brilliant set of texts. Assembled to create a "national narrative", and all about political control, and "practicality". Just dump the idea it's anything to do about religion, (the party line) and see it with "other eyes". The religion thing makes no sense. It was "constructed" at the command of the Persian Emperor, (Artaxerxes), in Babylon, (in Biblical Studies, known as the "Persian Imperative"). He knew he was going to send the Jews back to their "homeland" (which they had conquered). He wanted a "buffer" state between his nation and the newly conquered territory the Greeks had recently taken in the Levant. (The goal of the Greeks was thought to be, to conquer Egypt, eventually). To create this buffer-state, he decided he would send the Jews in exile, back, and attempt to re-create the old Jewish kingdom. How to do that ? Create a "national narrative" from the various traditions and myths that were present in the old Hebrew culture, (what is today called the "Documentary Hypothesis").

Viola.

Ezra returns with the (never seen before) Torah of Moses under his arm, along with the letter from ole Arty (Artaxerxes) telling the Jews how HE was going to set things up to run.

Make sense ? I'm afraid so.

At some point, people started taking the "literary device" as something else.
Sound familiar ? Yup.
Constantine did the SAME thing with Christianity, and the Arabs did the SAME thing with Islam.

It worked. Religion works as a political tool (IF you can get enough people to buy into it). Thumbsup

Insufferable know-it-all.Einstein God has a plan for us. Please stop screwing it up with your prayers.

Yeah, I kinda wish Steve had narrowed his scope some, there. Maybe "Five Stupid Things About the Pentateuch."

.... I swear, sometimes this feels too easy.

Only five? Do you even Bible? Dodgy

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

Luckily for the average person, it does not apply anymore...

“Take the risk of thinking for yourself, much more happiness, truth, beauty, and wisdom will come to you that way.
