Flip a damned coin.
Global fucking warming....

I guess....

Every winter - the conditions get more and more fucked up... We're in the middle of January -- when everything is usually in a deep freeze here in Michigan..... Normally....

Not anymore.

I'd be happy - not having to waste so much time, money and effort heating the house --- but -- I make maple syrup. You need a good hard midwinter freeze -- then a gradual warming -- where it's above freezing during the day - and below freezing at night -- for the sap to flow -- and have a decent sugar content......

Shit.... It's 44f -- well above freezing -- and has been since this time yesterday.....I've got some test trees tapped -- and sap is running, but the sugar content is for shit... About 2 percent. It's ALMOST worth tapping more trees and hoping the weather keeps the sap going. Almost.

There's also buds starting to appear on some trees. My understanding - is once the buds come in -- it won't run anymore sap.......

Shit....

I've talked to the other guys in the area who tap trees -- and all say the same thing ---- this is probably going to be their worst year --- for the 5th year in a row.....

Sad

So tap, or don't tap... That's the question...

We're trying to get the weather machines working again. Hold your horses.

Set it for zero.....

Fahrenheit, not Celsius.

And leave it there for at least a month....

Being a dumb Aussie, I'm not at all familiar with how maple syrup is produced, as it's not really a common condiment here. And if it needs to be below freezing to tap it, I guess then that kinda precludes us even trying here. Our average winter temperature is around 45ºF so it's only gonna be peanut butter for me LOL.

Have you got a link/pics to show us how it's done? Idea

RE: Flip a damned coin.
It was 65 here in Indiana today. Felt like late April. Average is normally 31. Normally.

Winters here have been getting milder and milder. I hope we at least get one good snow Sad

Only a few years ago we would get over a foot or even two. This year and the last we've barely had inches. I guess we can still hold out hope for Februrary :/

I really hope my garden plants aren't getting the wrong idea.

Maple syrup for dummes....

Drill a hole in a maple tree. (or box elder, birch, ect,_)

collect the watery shit that comes out.

Boil it, till the sugar content becomes 66 percent......................................

.....

considering it's usually about 2 percent or less to start with -- it's a whole buncha BTU's you're sticking into it......

RE: Flip a damned coin.
There are all sorts of changes in trees / forest populations in the US due to climate change. The pests that used to be under control or wiped out by really cold winters, are creeping northward as the winters are less cold. Yada yada ... many other things also. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/201...093610.htm

And here.

Thanks for the videos Chas. Very informative. Is there only one tap per tree, or multiples on different aspects of the same trunk? How long does it take on average to fill (say) a one gallon bucket, and how long do you have to boil it to reduce it by 40:1 as it sounds a painfully long process. Incidentally, we can buy (expensive!) imported Canadian maple syrup here in Oz in a few specialist shops; It's $49 for a 1-litre bottle (approx 1 US quart).
