For parents: how to raise kind kids
I ran across this article today and was pleasantly surprised it didn't have a religious slant. A few people here have expressed how they hope to raise their future kids. And there are a few of us with younger kids.

Anyway, I am always looking for good parenting advice, parenting is a skill learned like most other things.

"Children need to hear from parents that caring for others is a top priority."

Fuck off.
People are selfish cunts. If you only care about others than you're gonna get shafted in this world.
Care about yourself first so that you can achieve a position where you are than able to care for others properly.

There is wisdom in those words.

Being caring and kind and looking out for yourself are not mutually exclusive ideals. It its possible to do both.

Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. It's not black and white. It's grey like most things in life.

You and Muffs need to apply for jobs on Wall Street. You'll fit right in.

Caring isn't even entirely selfless. It can actually be quite self-serving.

I like the idea of teaching hobbit that caring about other people is important. Not over caring for herself, but seeing other people suffering as something to be changed.

We all live in a community. We all have a responsibility to each other. Somehow, especially in the US, the capitalist ideal has become confused with "every man for himself". Adam Smith would be appalled. Looking out for yourself and being a kind person are never mutually exclusive. There is never an excuse to not be considerate of other people.

It's a fucked up world we live in when that basic notion of humanity is considered as being open to subjective opinion and debate.
