Forced labour for Jobseekers on dole in UK
Indymedia UK Article

Big business exploiting the poor, with government assistance. Wow, that's a first. Dodgy

Next step, implant ID chips so as to ascertain who's in the program and who's not. Rolleyes

Am I understanding this right? People on unemployment will have to go to work for companies who will pay them essentially a slave wage? If the company has job openings, then why aren't they able to pay workers a decent wage? Wouldn't that solve this whole problem?

So workers work for slave wage, with less time to look for a "real" job? And businesses get away with what amounts to almost free labor?

Did I get this right?

My reason for being is to serve as a cat cushion. That is good enough for me. Wink

How the hell could that pass? What's the punishment for not taking the ''job''?
''Businesses will be paid for each person they get into a work placement.''
Did I understand that sentence right? So the businesses will get cheap labor + extra money for taking the cheap labor?

Sick.

Correct me when I'm wrong.
Accept me or go to hell.

It's odd because this 'nazi move' I'm pretty sure is why people hate communism. Like paying taxes with forced labour if you can't get decent work.

Please don't equate communism with Nazism. They are on opposite sides of the political spectrum.

I'm probably in the minority here but I'm not that bothered by this, at least conceptually. The idea of companies getting almost free labor does not sit well with me and the idea that that will convince them to hire more people is ridiculous. However, as a general rule, the idea that societies are going to no longer tolerate entire classes of people getting something for nothing is a step in the right direction. There is obviously a difference between someone who loses a job through no fault of their own and wants a new one and someone who just doesn't work, but I'm ok with the idea of expecting people to do something in return for money.

RE: Forced labour for Jobseekers on dole in UK
I agree that those who are welfare (or dole) parasites, should have to give back instead of subsisting on what in some cases is multi-generational handouts.
When I was a volunteer at a local hospital in the newborn nursery wing, I met a woman who had little stair steps of children looking into the special care nursery at their new arrival sibling as their mother, a crack whore who was so lit she didn't know she was pregnant when she went into labor, was looking into the incubator at her latest meal ticket.

Paid child support, food stamps, that medical bill playing out before my eyes was being paid for with my taxes, and all the while nothing inspired her to get clean and take care of the precious little one's she'd brought into the world while higher than a kite and barely aware they were there.

With this UK program, if I'm reading it right, I too agree it's great to make people work for their supper. Though in fairness as we all know, not everyone on the dole (or welfare) are so because they're lazy and parasitic.

The problem with this UK program is where's the impetus for the companies taking advantage of it to employ the working class, at full wages when they can hire those on the dole as slaves?

It stands to make the problem of unemployment worse, instead of better.
And what's frightening for some is that as the eyes of the U.S. government turn to the UK to see how this program works, give the income in this country that is received by those on welfare, it may be seen as a great pilot program to start here.

Like I said: government forcing people to provide cheap labor to private corporations is not something I favor and is a formula for complete economic disaster. This one article is, I think, pretty biased is its reporting of this story and is clearly coming at it with an agenda, so I take this one article with a very large grain of salt. I'm curious to see what the real plan is and what is finally proposed in the US. Generally, though, I think replacing welfare with "workfare" is a good idea and a necessary step.

Sadly, sound ideas rarely meet with competent deployment when it comes to government.
