Forum or Community
Disclaimer: This is not an official vote organised by any of our official officials and please don't think I'm being officious... I'm just curious.
A few threads back I started thinking about this and one recent one (I won't bore you with the links) was the trigger to asking the question. Forum: A medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged. Community: A social group whose members often have a common interest. I hear some cry, "But, surely it is both!" Sure, I think that is the intention but there is a difference and sometimes this difference rises to the surface. The issue of dealing with trolls / theists / trolling-theists has made the distinction obvious. Other threads (e.g. Bucky's Disgusting thread) have highlighted our (human) 5 pillars of morality, and this is what I am curious about. To save you any effort, here they are again: 1. Harm / care 2. Fairness / reciprocity 3. In-group / loyalty 4. Authority / respect 5. Purity / sanctity Note that the more liberal-minded are more in tune with #1 and #2 and the more conservative-minded value all five. ...we've seen emotions relating to all five in many threads on this forum but could it be that the commonality amongst all atheists is the reducing relevance of #4? One member as recently as three days ago handed in the towel (she was too polite to throw it), I think, because of her heightened sense of #5, with the words "I am not tough enough". The troll thread and many others have highlighted #3 which I think is at the root of the question in this thread's title. In other words, I'm wondering whether those of us with a stronger (our maybe just different) sense of group-loyalty (#3) regard this place a community that needs to be defended and if people don't think that's fair (#2) tough shit? For others, their instinct for #2 is stronger than that for #3 and are more likely to see this place as a forum. I recognise, of course, that from day-to-day we may vacillate and we may change as we age. These are just my thoughts... ... you decide.

I say forum because I don't believe in this internet community idea. We are not a social group

Verbally abusing members etc.. etc.. etc.. Just the other week there was a thread about trolls verbally abusing forum members and something should be done about it, and now it's okay and nothing should be done about it, in fact we should roll out the red carpet and invite them in with welcome arms?? Make up your god damn mind TTA. ![]() |

RE: Forum or Community
I voted for Forum. We have far too many opposing views on anything unrelated to atheism/theism to be called a social group with common interests.
