Fuel-less Space Drive May Actually Work, Says NASA
It looks like they have gotten experimental confirmation that a propellent-less drive can work, this is straight-up Star Trek impulse drive technology if this is true.

I don't understand it properly but I love the idea behind it Thumbsup
Anything that makes space travel more feasible, is great!

This is especially cool, one less step building fuel stations for mining! $$$ ha ha.

That is fantastic... Now all we need is to make it a billion times more powerful, while having it reasonably light, and not consuming significant energy.

Of course, the ion drive seems more likely to be of significance in our lifetimes.

Here's an update:

Independent expert confirms that the "impossible" EM Drive actually works

I hope interest and research funding for this accelerates, what an amazing breakthrough this could be.

Would this system be more promising than the solar sail on which there is some big hope for long distance space travel apparently?

By "propellent-less" they mean they don't have to carry a tank of propellent not that propellent isn't used in the drive.

It's a resonant microwave cavity that's self-contained. Yes, a propellant tank is not needed because it doesn't use any propellant.

At this point, it wouldn't generate much more thrust than a solar sail, but with engineering improvements, it could generate quite a bit more.
Even in it's current experimental phase, it would not be as large and wouldn't depend on the sun's light to propel it.
