It looks like they have gotten experimental confirmation that a propellent-less drive can work, this is straight-up Star Trek impulse drive technology if this is true.

That is fantastic... Now all we need is to make it a billion times more powerful, while having it reasonably light, and not consuming significant energy.

Of course, the ion drive seems more likely to be of significance in our lifetimes.
