I'm no expert on these things, having only been to a church service twice but it seems like I've seen the American flag at services I've seen on tv, like during news coverage of someone in the community who has died. I thought it was a common thing. Not that I agree with it but.....

Here's an LDS church with the flag on the outside.

I got curious...couldn't recall if there was a US flag in the Basilica of St. Francis or not. There is...on the side of the left altar (there are three altars). Apparently the Virgin Mary is a fan of the US since it's on her side.

See here they are the bruises some were self-inflicted and some showed up along the way. - JF

Maybe it's something that Americans are so used to seeing everywhere that they don't notice it in a church, especially when they're bored out of their skulls.

The Basilica is so ornately decorated (almost to the point of being gaudy though there is some amazing artwork) that it's nearly impossible to see everything. And I can assure you that I was seldom in one of the front pews. Tongue

There is enough seating for over a thousand people so you can imagine how far away from that altar you can be.

Something else to point out is that the MOH did not carry the meaning back then that carries today. The soldiers who escorted Lincoln to his tomb were awarded it and all they did was escort a dead body. It was about as easy to get one back then as it was to catch the clap. It didn't become the medal that we associate as the highest honor until later. I know that this is fairly small potatoes and the meat has already been addressed, but the statement that so many were awarded is meaningless if you keep in mind the context in which they were awarded in the Civil War.

"If we are honest—and scientists have to be—we must admit that religion is a jumble of false assertions, with no basis in reality.
The very idea of God is a product of the human imagination."

Say what you like about ISIS, they do promise universal free health-care under the global caliphate.

Fucking socialists!
