How about the Goblin Shark?

The people closely associated with the namesake of female canines are suffering from a nondescript form of lunacy.

What "kind" is this one?
It's Sub-class isn't even mammal so dog/wolf/cat is out.
Hint: Last of the species died in the 1930's

Last I heard there were some that thought there might still be some around. Not that I give a lot of credence to the Centre for Fortean Zoology.

Yea, whenever I see the word 'cryptozoologist' I'm pretty much done. Dodgy

I spent a week driving and hiking Tasmania. Every pub I stopped at had someone who knew someone who might have seen one. They are the Bigfoot of the island, the big difference, of course, is that they once existed. None have been seen for 75 years, there aren’t that many places an animal this large can hide.

Nothing strange looking about a Kiwi, they're rather fucking adorable actually.
However, they're technically a bird but have many mammal like characteristics. They're sort of a mammal/bird cross.

They have whiskers, they have nostrils at the end of their beak, they sleep standing up, they burrow like a badger, they have thick leathery skin, large muscular legs, it doesn't rely heavily on sight but rather on a strong sense of smell and touch, it has well developed hearing, it lays the largest egg in relation to body size in the bird kingdom, chicks are born as mini-adults capable of fending for themselves, they have two ovary instead of one and the Kiwi's plumage is shaggy and hair-like.

Almost like it's evolving from a bird to a mammal, just half way there.
Bonus of living on an island with no mammals or preditors until humans came along and fucked everything up.

I watched a documentary recently about these little guys.
There was excellent footage of them going about their daily business. I think isolated island species are some of the most interesting animals in the world.
