Gay student kills himself after sex tape of him made public
Because I haven't seen this story anywhere else on here. Link to article. To summarize, a couple of college students remotely turned on one of their webs cam after his roommate was promised his dorm room all to his self. They recorded him intimate with another guy. The roommate was a closet gay, and horribly embarrassed when the video was streamed for the entire world to see. So embarrassed that he ended up killing himself.

This is horrible and sad, I don't think anyone here would argue that. But it does raise the question what sort of punishment should his roommate and the friend, the people who turned on the web cam and streamed the video, face? A lot of people are also complaining that the internet has destroyed all sense of privacy too.

Some people are pushing for charging them with man slaughter, but I think that's a bit harsh. From what I've read, it seems like it was meant to be just some stupid college prank taken too far. An extremely stupid and poorly thought out prank, but I don't think anyone had truly malicious intentions. I don't think that throwing these people in jail, ruining their lives and quite possibly turning them into hardened criminals will fix the problem.

I don't believe Jesus is the son of God until I see the long form birth certificate!

I think they should have to pay for all funeral expenses, any grief counseling needed by family and friends, and I do think they should spend a little time in jail. I don't know enough about the law to suggest an appropriate charge, but I really think they should be made an example of. This bullying thing has gotten out of control.

Although the prank was extremely cruel and inconsiderate, I highly doubt that the pranksters knew this would be the outcome. I doubt that their goal was to actually push the guy into suicide. I too don't know enough about law to pin a specific charge as their punishment, but I do believe Athnostic's incentive-to-the-family idea sounds fair. I can't even imagine the amount of stress and remorse the pranksters are feeling as a result of this.

They will have to fully compensate what they've caused and this thing will probably haunt them for the rest of their lifes. What's done is done. I hope that even the worst assholes have enough brain to not always learn every lesson through experience.

A prank? Making a coke-mentos bottle, scaring the sheet out of someone, heating a door handle with a blowtorch, putting a porny sound for someones computers shutting down music when s/he's going to the library to use it, and so on, are pranks, but this thing?

Correct me when I'm wrong.
Accept me or go to hell.

I find it hard to think that these goofs had no malicious intent. Either they had malicious intent or they are profoundly stupid. Spreading something on the internet about someone else that is supposed to be private is a cruel thing to do and it doesn't take much fore thought to figure that out.

All practical jokes need to be thought out in advance. Two men (Tom & Dick) at a place where I used to work decided to use pour some gas-line anti-freeze on a coin and heat it up with the intent to get another man (Harry) to see it and pick it up. While Tom & Dick (ficticious names) were waiting for the Harry to arrive the flame, that was heating the coin, appeared to go out. They decided to put a little more anti-freeze on it. They didn't realize that this kind of anti-freeze can burn with an invisible flame. As Tom poured the anti-freeze onto the coin, the anti-freeze burst into flame. He jumped and instinctively tossed the bottle, right into Dick's direction. Burning anti-freeze landed on Dick and ignited his shirt. He ended up in the hospital with severe burns. All for a laugh.

OK I do have thoughts on this topic, but they are complicated as are most of my opinions. As far as how should these guys be punished, well lawfully speaking did they violate the law? If so then they should be tried for whatever law they broke. Laws aside they should punished by society harshly. What I mean is not to beat them or anything, but to make them live with this shame in their face for the rest of their life. OK that's the easy part the hard part is the bullying issue. Yes I feel this is bullying, but why? Well bullying comes down to a lack of respect for your fellow humans, and quite frankly begins and ends with parenting! Bullying is WAY WAY Out of control! Were protecting bullies for fear of litigation. Schools are powerless, and parents are starting to take things into their own hands. Bullying need to be a huge focus going forward and it needs to be dealt with harshly, and the people that need to be dealt with are PARENTS!

I think Heinlein had about he right slant:

"Practical jokers should be rewarded in accordance with the level of their wit. Bastinado is about right. For exceptional wit one might grant keelhauling. But staking out on an anthill should be reserved for the very wittiest."

For those with limited knowledge of medieval tortures,

bastinado - soles of the feet are beaten with an object such as a cane or rod, a club, a piece of wood, or a whip.

keelhauling - tied to a rope that looped beneath a sea vessel, thrown overboard on one side of the ship, and dragged under the ship's keel, either from one side of the ship to the other, or the length of the ship (from bow to stern). Barnacles on the ship could make this particularly debilitating, not to mention the high chance of drowning.
