RE: Giant crosses
There's one near me too.

This is in Effingham, Illinois.

I've recently grown rudimentary legs and am now making the move from water to land.

Who care about crosses?

We have 36m high statue of Jesus (or Aragorn, depend on who you're asking).

Świebodzin, Poland.

The first revolt is against the supreme tyranny of theology, of the phantom of God. As long as we have a master in heaven, we will be slaves on earth.

Someone who must have had a major grudge against the church climbed Irelands highest peak with an angle grinder to cut down a 5 metre steel cross.

I find it somewhat amusing when the statue in Rio gets hit by lightning.

Probably because such charity has no Earthly reward ... whereas driving people into your churches is a pretty lucrative business.

Just like any large corporation, they spend more on advertising than on charitable foundations.

RE: Giant crosses
I found a POI file of "giant" roadside crosses and mapped them out...

There are 472 roadside crosses that, according to the steward of this data, are at least 15 feet tall, 3-dimensional structures (as opposed to images painted on building or something).

A breakdown by state of "giant" cross locations:
AL (14)
AR (9)
CA (4)
CT (5)
FL (15)
GA (17)
IL (7)
IN (15)
KS (6)
KY (19)
LA (5)
MA (1)
MD (12)
MI (2)
MS (8)
MO (12)
NC (76)
NJ (7)
NY (10)
OH (32)
OK (6)
PA (36)
SC (21)
TN (19)
TX (24)
VA (51)
WI (1)
WV (38)

If anyone cares to marvel at the ridiculousness of these displays, I will be happy to post Google Street View Links to all of them...

I just wanted to let you know that I love you even though you aren't naked right now. Heart

Interesting, some of the higher numbers are in the North.

Higher concentration of Catholics, probably.
