Giant new machine sucking carbon dioxide
That must be a quantum leap for science and humanity

Errrr....................not really. If you read the article, it doesn't get rid of the CO2, it merely captures it so that it can be released into greenhouses and into carbonated drinks.

So its simply making existing CO2 available to be released into the atmosphere all over again.

The invisible and the non-existent look very much alike

RE: Giant new machine sucking carbon dioxide
Certainly sounds promising—initially—but if the goal is to capture a mere 1% of the world's global CO2 emissions with the same technology, there'd apparently need to be about 250,000 similar plants, which is economically nonviable.

I note too that the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine says: "Carbon dioxide removal addresses the root cause of climate change—high concentrations of the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere—and generally have well-understood benefits and risks, but current technologies would take decades to achieve moderate results and be cost-prohibitive at scales large enough to have a sizeable impact".

—Call me a pessimist, but I'd be tempted to think that this company, Climeworks AG, is merely another corporatist entity cynically trying to cash in on the global climate warming scenario, and generate huge dollar profits.

I'm a creationist... I believe that man created God.

There was talk of genetically modifying live stock so they don't produce as much methane, which apparently is a high contributor in green house gases. Not sure if that's practical mind you, but an idea non the less.

Yes, that's right. The problem is that we are adding carbon from underground to the carbon cyle above ground. To be helpful, carbon removed from the air would have to be sequestered, by burying it underground again or by creating frozen carbon hydrates and dropping them deep in the ocean. Both processes are expensive.

Actually is IS a *thing* and the carbon captured can be used for all kinds of things.

Wouldn't it be GREAT to get the Nobel for inventing the non-farting cow.

That would be a gas!
