Gingrich: US Abandons Christianity for Secularism
NEWSMAX
April 27, 2011

Religion is being driven out of U.S. culture, says former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who insists that he’s not happy about it. Europe started the trend with a “crisis of secularism” that created a “government-favored culture to replace Christianity,” Gingrich said at the National Catholic Prayer breakfast in Washington, Politico reports.

Newt Gingrich, Christianity, secularismNow that attitude has spread to the United States, Gingrich said. (More)

Boo hoo hoo! Fiction is being replaced by something that can be verifiably tested!

When I find myself in times of trouble, Richard Dawkins comes to me, speaking words of reason, now I see, now I see.

It's called 'progress'. Society is constantly moving forward, that why we no longer live in caves. Why is it always the religious community who seem to think progress (social and scientific) should be prohibited.

RE: Gingrich: US Abandons Christianity for Secularism
There's a pretty insidious power-play going on in the States that's based on demagoguery. 911 fucked the States good, because it brought two very powerful voting blocks, the Evangelicals and the patriotic, together in a huddled mass of trembling fear and provided a platform to exploit them. Men like Bush, Gingrich, Huckabee, Romney, Cheney, Beck, O'Reiley (and women like Palin), the list goes on, are just saying, with conviction, all of the things that pander to this block’s base nature. God this, America the free that. Believe in us, give us the power, and we'll save you from the terrorists and the Muslims and the godless and the communists and the socialists and immigrants and the non-patriots. And it’s a brilliant political strategy because they constitute such a powerful voting block, that you can take the White House with their backing alone. Men like Gingrich make me ill because if they were actually zealots, I could at least respect their conviction. But they're not. They're opportunists. They're demagogues.

I can't wait for the day when an American leader emerges that can lead the Evangelicals and the patriots down a road of peace and away from fear. I can’t wait for the day that this leader helps the American people let go of 911 and move past it and not let it control them anymore. It'll happen one day. I just hope it's sooner rather than later.

Hey, Hughsie.

I disagree that society is always moving forward just because evolution isn't about heading towards anything, but rather just describing a process of change.

Peace and Love and Empathy,

Matt

RE: Gingrich: US Abandons Christianity for Secularism
I don't want to push religion out of America. I'm no anthropologist, but I find religious cultures deeply interesting. That said, I do think that religion needs to step back from the government. Right now the religious right and big business are teaming up against the citizens of America to attack our rights at being treated fairly at work, the rights of women, the rights of the poor, destitute, uninsured, etc, and I think if religion were taken out of the picture then the emotional attachment that the masses have for these arguments would wane, and America could work towards being a freer country again.
Further on the Newt Gingrich note though, this quote attributed to him was in the most recent Freethought Today that I recieved:" I am convinced that if we do not decisively win the struggle over the nature of America, [personal edit: I wonder if he pronounced it Amurrica when he said it?] by the time they're my age [he's referring to his grandchildren] they will be in a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radicals Islamists and with no understanding of what it once meant to be an American."
Ummmmm. At this point I am wondering: Can he define "secular" or "atheist"? Just how in the world does he put those two together with Islam? Also, who writes his speeches for him, and does it ever occur to anyone in his staff to check these speeches with somebody who has, I don't know, a f*%$ing brain?

Hey, cfhmagnet.

What? You've never heard of secular atheist Muslims?

There was a really good TED talk with Naomi Kline recently where she talked about how mad it is that someone like Palin can say "drill, baby, drill," out of one side of her mouth and embrace the unspoiled beauty of Alaska the way only a true American can out the other. Logic means nothing to Orwellian tyrants.

And corporations don't need the help of religion to rob us of rights Cool

Peace and Love and Empathy,

Matt

Can't say I've heard of atheist Muslims. Or atheist Christians, or Atheist Hindus...I have heard of atheist Buddhists though Smile
I think that you can have a secular Muslim society, if they choose to separate church and state, but that doesn't seem to be what Mr. Gingrich is implying.

I think Sarah Palin is the type of person who needs to be locked away in a wooden box in a government warehouse and examined by top men. And by that I mean top. Men. And no, corporations don't NEED religion to rob us of our rights, but it sure seems to help. I can't tell you how many working men I've seen/heard/talked to who speak out against the working men largely because of emotional/religious/distorted views they eat out of the hands of the conservative propaganda machine.

And off-topic now Matt, I like your sign off on every post. Peace, love and empathy are 3 great things to desire seeing universalized.

Looks good that secularism is taking over. Happy to see that my country is becoming more secular. We are still too religious for my taste though. Secularism needs to keep growing here.
