God needed another angel? No!
2 nights ago my cousin died. She was battling cancer. The doctor gave her a couple of weeks but she fought for almost 10 months. She was one of those "grab life by the nuts a twist" type people. Not the type to get knocked down. She left behind a husband and 3 kids, the oldest of which was 12.
So of course there are condolences given from people all over facebook.
A discussion was started when someone said "I don't understand why God would take her." Some answered with things like "god needed another angel" and others with "we will never understand" and shit like that.
This must be so hard on the theist mind. To not only have no control but to fail to understand why horrible shit happens. I on the other hand don't have that sence of powerlessness. Of course I'm powerless to stop death but I understand compleatly why it happens. I know exactly why a mother of young children die of cancer and so do you guys. It happens because that's fucking life and there is no magic man in the sky taking lives and destroying the lives of the living. The universe is a cold and uncaring place and the only thing we can really depend on is each other. It happened not because god did it but because cancer did it.
I would say that in times of death its best not to express these feelings to those who are grieving but at the same time I think this faith that people have wont allow them to truly accept what has happened. Faith makes death much harder to deal with....

My condolences to you. It's hard enough dealing with death as it is. All the b.s. excuses don't help at all.

DD, first Hug

Yeah the platitudes and bleating are to comfort themselves. I'm sure people said much the exact same kinda shit when someone died when everyone believed in Zeus.

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces

RE: God needed another angel? No!
I'm so sorry.

You're probably familiar with this but I'll post it anyway. I doubt that theists would agree with the following but, anyway, here it is.

"You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want the physicist to talk to your grieving family about the conservation of energy, so they will understand that your energy has not died. You want the physicist to remind your sobbing mother about the first law of thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. You want your mother to know that all your energy, every vibration, every Btu of heat, every wave of every particle that was her beloved child remains with her in this world. You want the physicist to tell your weeping father that amid energies of the cosmos, you gave as good as you got.
And at one point you'd hope that the physicist would step down from the pulpit and walk to your brokenhearted spouse there in the pew and tell him that all the photons that ever bounced off your face, all the particles whose paths were interrupted by your smile, by the touch of your hair, hundreds of trillions of particles, have raced off like children, their ways forever changed by you. And as your widow rocks in the arms of a loving family, may the physicist let her know that all the photons that bounced from you were gathered in the particle detectors that are her eyes, that those photons created within her constellations of electromagnetically charged neurons whose energy will go on forever.

And the physicist will remind the congregation of how much of all our energy is given off as heat. There may be a few fanning themselves with their programs as he says it. And he will tell them that the warmth that flowed through you in life is still here, still part of all that we are, even as we who mourn continue the heat of our own lives.

And you'll want the physicist to explain to those who loved you that they need not have faith; indeed, they should not have faith. Let them know that they can measure, that scientists have measured precisely the conservation of energy and found it accurate, verifiable and consistent across space and time. You can hope your family will examine the evidence and satisfy themselves that the science is sound and that they'll be comforted to know your energy's still around. According to the law of the conservation of energy, not a bit of you is gone; you're just less orderly. Amen."

-Aaron Freeman.

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.

Except it was more like Zeus needed another mortal to have an affair with.

The irony is that scripture identifies mankind and angels as two distinct groups. The bible makes no mention of humans becoming angels when they die. Next time someone makes that comment, tell them to cease their blasphemy.

What's irritating is when a person who was openly an atheist does and then asshats say things like "The Lord took him home." Bull shit! How fucking disrespectful is that bull! He was a fucking atheist, he made it very clear what he wanted, how can you disrespect him like that?!?

You have my sympathies, bud.

For what it's worth, if the turnover in angels is so bad that God has to kill people in order to make up the shortfall, perhaps he should review his HR best practices and policies.

"Your god doesn't need angels.

We however, need parents to raise and protect children from a god that you think needs more angels."

That's what I would tell them.

Also - sorry for your loss.

RE: God needed another angel? No!
I am terribly sorry for the loss. More motherless children, how heartbreaking. I hate to hear that, they are so young to lose so much.

The sentiment of god needing another angel angers me to a level that doesn't allow for me to say anything else right now.

I would give you a real hug if I could. That's the best I can do.

See here they are the bruises some were self-inflicted and some showed up along the way. - JF
