I can tell you which book not to buy in my opinion....Philosophy for Dummies. I found it to be pretty biased to the authors pro god views.

Here's a direct quote and about the point I gave up "Naturalism is ultimately a pessimistic world view. Theism tends to be optimistic concerning at least the long term." (pg. 241)

Find the website of a reputable university. Find course pages, most of which are publicly available. See what books they recommend for the relevant course sections.

Check out Sophie's World, by Jostein Gaarder - it's an introduction to philosophy in novel form - good stuff!

Also, What's It All About?, by Julian Baggini.
