Good songs for those breaking away from or without religion
Feel free to add more. I'm starting with "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia. A great song, whether or not it is about religion, I don't know. But most of it certainly can apply! I will add the youtube link when I get home...

"Torn"

I thought, I saw a man brought to life
He was warm, he came around and he was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry

Well, you couldn't be that man I adored
You don't seem to know
Seem to care what your heart is for
But I don't know him anymore

There's nothing where he used to lie
The conversation has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's fine, I'm torn

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor

Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see
The perfect sky is torn
You're a little late, I'm already torn

So I guess the fortune teller's right
Should have seen just what was there
And not some holy light

It crawled beneath my veins
And now I don't care, I had no luck
I don't miss it all that much
There's just so many things
That I can touch, I'm torn

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor

Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see
The perfect sky is torn
You're a little late, I'm already torn, torn

There's nothing where he used to lie
My inspiration has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's right, I'm torn

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on this floor

Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see
The perfect sky is torn

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I'm ashamed
Bound and broken on the floor
You're a little late, I'm already torn, torn

I prefer fantasy, but I have to live in reality.

RE: Good songs for those breaking away from or without religion
I was going to post REM's Losing My Religion, but that's about homosexuality and not religion, if I remember correctly. I always thought Metallica's Unforgiven II was about atheism.

The Unforgiven II

Lay beside me, tell me what they've done
Speak the words I wanna hear, to make my demons run
The door is locked now, but it's open if you're true
If you can understand the me, than I can understand the you

Lay beside me, under wicked sky
The black of day, dark of night, we share this paralyze
The door cracks open, but there's no sun shining through
Black heart scarring darker still, but there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining...

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you....

What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?

Lay beside me, this won't hurt I swear
She loves me not, she loves me still, but she'll never love again
She lay beside me, But she'll be there when I'm gone
Black heart scarring darker still, yes she'll be there when I'm gone
Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone
Dead sure she'll be there...

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you....

What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?

Lay beside me, tell me what I've done
The door is closed, so are you're eyes
But now I see the sun, now I see the sun
Yes now I see it

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you....

What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits,
The one who waits for you....

Oh what I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you.... (So I dub thee unforgiven....)

Oh, what I've felt....
Oh, what I've known....

I take this key (never free...)
And I bury it (never me...) in you
Because you're unforgiven too....

Never free....
Never me....
'Cause you're unforgiven too....

RE: Good songs for those breaking away from or without religion
"Wide Awake" - Katy Perry spoke to me during my deconversion. Waking up from religion.

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

I'm wide awake
Yeah, I was in the dark
I was falling hard
With an open heart
I'm wide awake
How did I read the stars so wrong?
I'm wide awake
And now it's clear to me
That everything you see
Ain't always what it seems
I'm wide awake
Yeah, I was dreaming for so long

[Pre-Chorus]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn't dive in
Wouldn't bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
'Til I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus]
Falling from cloud nine
Crashing from the high
I'm letting go tonight
Yeah, I'm falling from cloud nine

I'm wide awake
Not losing any sleep
I picked up every piece
And landed on my feet
I'm wide awake
Need nothing to complete myself, no

I'm wide awake
Yeah, I am born again
Out of the lion's den
I don't have to pretend
And it's too late
The story's over now, the end

[Pre-Chorus]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn't dive in
Wouldn't bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
'Til I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus]
Falling from cloud nine (it was out of the blue)
I'm crashing from the high
I'm letting go tonight (yeah, I'm letting you go)
I'm falling from cloud nine

I'm wide awake
Thunder rumbling
Castles crumbling
I'm wide awake
I am trying to hold on
I'm wide awake
God knows that I tried
Seeing the bright side
I'm wide awake
I'm not blind anymore...

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

[Chorus]
Yeah, I'm falling from cloud nine (it was out of the blue)
I'm crashing from the high
You know I'm letting go tonight (yeah, I'm letting you go)
I'm falling from cloud nine

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

The Bible is Bullshit - Corporate Avenger

The requirement of evidence to back your claim does not disappear because it hurts your feelings, reality does not care about your feefees.

RE: Good songs for those breaking away from or without religion

Lyrics:

I felt your grip begin to fade
You kept me tied, blind and afraid
But then I broke you and saw
The look on your face said it all

So could you feel the way I felt
Did you kneel the way I knelt
Did you stand up and yell
Pleading for someone to help

Or listen to reason
Open your eyes
It's a wonder what you'll find with an open mind
You may be surprised
Yeah

Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh
Yeah-ooh

If the dark is just a thought
Then the light is in your mind
The lies we tell ourselves
Will ruin the world with time

Did you feel the way I felt
Did you kneel the way I knelt
Or did you look up and stare
Waiting for your acts of prayer

Won't you listen to reason.
Will you open your eyes
It's a wonder what you'll find with an open mind
You might be surprised
Yeah

Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh
Yeah-ooh

Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh

When is it enough
When will we all wake up
So look around
And see what's right before your eyes
No control beyond these skies

Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh
Yeah-ooh

Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh

I love this song so much. Smile

Swing with me a while, we can listen to the birds call, we can keep each other warm.
Swing with me forever, we can count up every flower, we can weather every storm.

RE: Good songs for those breaking away from or without religion

Preacher man wanna save my soul
don't nobody wanna save my life
People we done lost control
Let's make heaven tonight
Preacher man wanna save my soul
don't nobody wanna save my life
People we done lost control
Let's make heaven tonight

Now as I sleep, may the oxygen inflate my lungs
May my arteries and heart oscillate as one
If police come may I awake, escape, and run
in the morning may have the sake to scrape the funds
And if I take the plunge
may it be said that I wasn't afraid to shake my tongue
show the state was scum,
makin' sure that the callin' bell of fate was rung
'Cause if they could they would and probably tried to rape the sun

Someone said this is just a just my body, wait for the after-party
where there ain't no shutoff note and every wallet there is knotty
Feet on the asphalt, dick in the dirt
this system takes viccin' to work,

Listen alert
check out the introvert, in the corner with the rip in her skirt
Stomach pain so she's grippin' her shirt
Ain't never had dinner, so ya know she ain't gettin' desert
Don't tell me it's her mission to hurt

I got faith in the people and they power to fight
We gon' make this struggle blossom like a flower to light
I know that we can take power tonight
make 'em cower from might
and get emergency clearance from the tower for flight

I ain't sittin' in your pews, unless ya helpin' me resist and refuse
show me a list of yo' views
If ya really love me, help me tear this motherfucker up
consider this my tithe for the offer cup

[chorus]

I used to think about infinity
and how my memory is finna be invisibly slim in that vicinity
And though the stars are magnificent
whiskey and the midnight sky can make ya feel insignificant

The revolution in this tune and verse
is a bid for my love to touch the universe
Struggling over wages and funds
let the movement get contagious and run
Through the end when it's gauges and guns
And if we win in the ages to come
we'll have a chapter where the history pages are from

They won't never know our name or face
but feel our soul in free food they taste
Feel our passion when they heat they house
when they got power on the street and the police don't beat 'em about

Let's make health care centers on every block
Let's give everybody homes and a garden plot
Let's give all the kids books, ten kids a class
and give 'em truth for they pencils and pads
Retail clerk: love ballads's where you place this song
Let's make heaven right here just in case they wrong

[chorus]
