Google search tips
Hey,LV here
i will explain some search parameters that will really help you if you are searching shit without getting the results you want.
The first is inurl:
this filters all results of a specific (sub)domain

example
if you wanted to search what TTA members said about obama on the forum, you would search
inurl:thethinkingatheist.com obama

the second one are quotation marks ("")
this searches for the exact phrase
maybe you hear a theist say something incredibly technical ans suspect it was copypasta.
Then copy a piece of the text, include "" to it and google it
works great if you hear a song but cant remember the name

imagine you hear this on the radio and want to know the title
"imagine all the people living for todaay, imagine there's no countries... It isnt hard to do... Nothing to kill for,and no religion too...."

simply google

"imagine all the people living for today"

and get that title

the third one is "-" to exclude something

example
you are searching for information on bears, but you keep seeing sites about gummy bears (highly improbable i might add,but i have no good example)
so you would search

bears -gummy

this can also be combined with other parameters like
inurl

maybe you're searching stuff about evolution but the wiki page isnt detailed enough

then simply search

evolution -inurl:wikipedia.org

the next one is link:site.com

this filters the pages linking the site

say i wanted to find wich pages link to my site
i would simply search

atheism link:atheist.waphall.com

we also have {a|b}
say you wanted to know if someone lived in canada or USA. You could search

(john doe) addess {USA|canada}

the last one for this post is related:
this one lists related websites for you

say you saw something awsome on the news ,like a burglar who reported that the house he broke into contained kiddie porn. Then you could search

{burglar|thief} report police pedophile related:CNN.com

I don't really like going outside.
It's too damn "peopley" out there....

RE: Google search tips
So here are a few others

*
the atherisk is a wildcard

suppose you are searching information about your LIGHTVADER™ wireless card ,but you keep forgetting the model
the only thing you know is that it starts with AWD321
so simply google
lightvader AWD321***

".."
this one is easier to show an example of than to explain

say you want to buy a nice android smatphone for hubby's birthday in the price range of $500 to $700

search
android samsung $500..$700

easy peasy

cache:
this one is pretty awsome

say you're bookmarked something, and now you try to click it. To your horror you see the website has been changed or the website is down.

Then search
cache:site.goes.here/without.http://infront

I don't really like going outside.
It's too damn "peopley" out there....

RE: Google search tips
Say you want to reseach if there's a link between obesity and cancer

search this:
obesity cancer link scholarly

i actually don't know what exactly falls under scholarly eventho it is the most frequently used parameter by me,but you'll find sites like pubmed, university sites, ect.

Also,i wanted to add that
instead of using "" ,you can use {} to find exact phrases. I don't know if there's a difference, but most of the time i use ""

also,if you want to know how to do something, lets say make a backup of your hard drive, search things like

how to backup hard drive
tutorial backup hard drive
guide backup hard drive

and when searching,it's best to exclude words like and,so,is,etc.
( not by -so -is -and,but by simply not writing them in the box)

that's all i know about google searching, fellas

I don't really like going outside.

RE: Google search tips
nice, some there I'd never heard of.

A favourite of mine is the date range search, but you need to convert the date into Julian beforehand, use this tool: http://www.onlineconversion.com/julian_date.htm

Then to search for say Atheism in 1999 you would search
[ "atheism" daterange:2451179-2451543 ]
1st jan 1999= 245117
31st dec 1999 = 2451543

Only 69,300 sites added/updated that year vs 17.8 million in 2013 *

*Social network feeds in sites are making the results of date range searches too unreliable to quote as fact.

Theism is to believe what other people claim, Atheism is to ask "why should I".

RE: Google search tips
Something I just noticed you're missing that I use all the time is the filetype command.
Need a manual for your car? Don't want a website, but a PDF so you can use it offline?

Here's how to search it:
Code:
1969 Camaro Z28 manual filetype:pdf

Here's your search results. This is best used in combination with the above mentioned tips such as related, -, and "".
This is also very good for ripping stuff, but shhhh, you didn't hear it from me!
