Google to modify how it ranks websites
Truthiness will prevail! Apparently some at Faux News are in a tizzy Big Grin

"The trustworthiness of a web page might help it rise up Google's rankings if the search giant starts to measure quality by facts, not just links

THE internet is stuffed with garbage. Anti-vaccination websites make the front page of Google, and fact-free "news" stories spread like wildfire. Google has devised a fix – rank websites according to their truthfulness.

Google's search engine currently uses the number of incoming links to a web page as a proxy for quality, determining where it appears in search results. So pages that many other sites link to are ranked higher. This system has brought us the search engine as we know it today, but the downside is that websites full of misinformation can rise up the rankings, if enough people link to them.

A Google research team is adapting that model to measure the trustworthiness of a page, rather than its reputation across the web. Instead of counting incoming links, the system – which is not yet live – counts the number of incorrect facts within a page. "A source that has few false facts is considered to be trustworthy," says the team (arxiv.org/abs/1502.03519v1). The score they compute for each page is its Knowledge-Based Trust score.”

Hell yeah.
Maybe they could build in their own "Web of Trust" type of system where it shows the legitimacy of the content of a particular page, based on peer-reviewed evidence Thumbsup

"answersingenesis.com/...
Warning, the content on this page is known to contain the following logical fallacies:
...blah
...blahblah blah
....
....blah blah
....
....blah blahblah blah

........................ blah

Please proceed with caution and intelligence."

If we came from dust, then why is there still dust?

Their algorithm is likely to generate an arithmetic underflow error when it tries to rate the truthfulness of the AIG website.

Crap, how is that going to work with religion? Lots of bad claims and scientific absurdities in that. I am not sure if this will be all good. It may simply be another marketing tool to get big business to give them money and data mining.

Interesting. I'm curious about how it will verify whether something is correct or not, but it sounds like good news.

RE: Google to modify how it ranks websites
Firstly , google constantly lies by omission to prevent people from gaming the algo. Many, many sites are constantly trying to game the algo. Google would be a fool to publish what all they actually do. They only release what they want site owners to know - and that is usually that site owners better get off their duff and provide better info. You could make millions online quickly if you actually understood the algo. If you think you got it figured out, get with me and we'll take over the internet. Tongue Seriously, actually. Thumbsup

Google has long moved from ranking mostly based on links. It measures many, many things, from simple things like age of site to visitor behavior (google analytics is one of the best stats program there is and google knows everything anyone does on your site and concludes many things from there, such as usefulness of content, visitor satisfaction and many other things).

Google already has "trusted sites" - Each major category has a trusted site that sits on the first page of results for many many keywords. When this site adds something, the new content is automatically trusted and pops to page one within the hour. A website owners dream.

It sounds like what they will do is select sites that have the most trustworthy info on a topic and compare chunks of information to it. But it will likely also do things like look for sensationalist presentation, recognized by language analysis. Instead of looking at incoming links it may look at outgoing links, grounding information.

Google's algo is already taking hundreds of things into consideration. I bet this new addition to the algo is going to contain many other criteria.
