Got witnessed to while out on my bicycle.
First, I have to say, he was a very nice guy.

Here's the back story. My apartment is close to a relatively large church, so I like to use their lot to ride my bike [for excercise]. While riding, I saw a piece of landscaping that I thought was pretty cool. There was a cross [of course], but also some large flat rocks with a pump mechanism that poured a fair amount of water onto what just LOOKS like a rock landscaping. Obviously, there was some sort of screen and tub that catches the water, so it can be recycled. . . . . effect looking like this "stream" is constantly flowing. The whole "river of life" thing.

Well, he came up [said that god laid it on his heart to come back to me], and sure enough [after discussing the landscape], asked me if I went to church. I basically told him my story [that I have told here before, . . . raised in church, never felt anything like "a personal relationship" and am now agnostic].

He listened and explained that he also "had issues with faith, . . . studied science, yet was empty . . . until he surrendered to god". Now, I fully understand what he was getting at. I was "a christian" for a LONG time. As for "why I am no longer likely to be a christian again", . . . I didn't really want to get into it because it is "a personal burden" of sorts. If he is happy in his christian life, I don't want to destroy it, . . . . . .even though he said that "he's probably heard it all before". Some things he hasn't. Some things [doctrines] are just too damn evil to be embraced, even IF it were proved to be correct. That's just the way it is. For example:

Most people are clueless about the ACTUAL history of the hebrews and bible. Polytheism. El Elyon, Asherah, Baal, etc. How the bible [old testament] was manipulated, changed, fabricated, etc. Even how hebrew religious aspects were taken from older religions. I'm sure he would say that these things are "lies of the enemy". He can say such things, but it doesn't change the truth.

Most christians are actually oblivious to the "evil" aspects of their bible. Even their doctrines! The very central one is enough! The idea that "a god would be SO wrathful at man that 'he' would require something dying bloody before 'he' would be happy again? That is pure evil!

The notion that Jesus [as understood by christianity] was some sort of "sacrifice" [when he merely endured a bit of pain and is now god, to be worshipped for all eternity], . . . that Jesus, if he was god, couldn't have "experienced temptation" on any true level, because of the aspect of what a TRUE temptation must be accompanied by, . . . an actual desire TO do the act.

He gave me his number so "we can talk again". I understand his well meaning desire. I can appreciate that he cares about people. But in reality, I cannot be what he wants me to be. "A person surrendered to god". I see no evidence for such a being. Now, . . . he said he was "going to pray for me", . . . so I asked him to "pray that god would show me something that I could not deny". Of course, this won't happen because this "god" doesn't exist out there, but if anything would better "convince me", . . . it would have to be something like the movie Contact. Dr. Arroway spent a MUCH longer time in the sphere than what everyone else saw [as it fell straight through, in their perspective]. So, I won't hold my breath that "something undenyable" will happen, but if nothing else, it will give him something to do during his devotions. Evil_monster

At least he was fairly nice about it. More than you can say for some people.

I really hate it when they say or imply that people are "lost" or "empty." I mean, some people may feel that way, and then fill that need with religion, but I just don't like the idea that they think everybody has some religion-shaped void to be filled and everybody has to "surrender" to their god. [shudder]

This is the problem with the monotheisms, though, they think it's their way or the highway.

Miracles don't convince anyone. Even if someone said they had the power of Jesus Christ that came from God the Father, and they raised a rotted corpse back to life (back to a healthy body, not a zombie), you still would lose your faith. After all, there's lots of things we have no explanation for in this universe:

consciousness
gravity
dark matter
dark energy
wave/particle duality
non-locality
instincts in animals
psi phenomena
trainable paramecia

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. My point is: Just because the guy said he had the power of Jesus Christ doesn't mean he was right. He might have been mistaken.

Accepting the existence of God starts with seeing yourself as a sinner and as imperfect and not looking away from that with all the various psychological defense mechanisms we normally use to look away. To be in a state of sin and imprefection is not humanly, psychologically, bearable. One will seek salvation somehow if they truly look at what they are.

So, we always--always--accept God's existence, and His gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, after emotional consideration--never logic or reason (We only see the logic and reason afterwards.), and we never--ever--believe in God from miracles.

Of course, you mean that for DeavonReye. No, you do. Because my post is not that big of a deal--compared to other things I've posted. But you're worried it might actually make some sense to him (and it might not) but you want to make sure he knows that if it does, he better not say anything at all about it. Otherwise, he's going to be thrown under the bus by the atheists in this forum.

That's why you're being so incredibly vulgar, even more so than normal. You want to associate me with something so negative that he won't ever want to be associated with me. It's Junior High clique strategy.

Of course, you play right into the hand of God and you don't even realize it.

And I'm sure not going to tell you.

You're over-analysing it. I just want to see you with a load of come in your mouth.

Yeah, . . . probably why I talked for as long as I did. And why I chose to NOT "open the can of worms" that most christians are unaware of, even pastors. However, if he had been combative, . . . telling me that I'm "a filthy sinner, deserving of the hell I'm going to", then the gloves would have come off and I would have had to hand him his ass to chew on for a while.

RE: Got witnessed to while out on my bicycle.
Egor, . . . the concept of "sin" is not a part of my worldview. "Sin" is basically "falling from the expectations of god" [roughtly put]. But I do not have any reason to see this "god" as being real. Just people making claims of it "being true". As I told the guy, I tried for more than 20 years to "find god". . . "have a personal relationship with Jesus", etc. . . . . and it was empty. Nothing there but my own thoughts.

As for me "being perfect", . . . why does this "god" require something of me that 'he' isn't? There are plenty of places in the bible that speak quite well of the IMperfection of the biblical god. They are in there for you to find, . . . just takes some digging without the "doctrinal glasses" firmly applied to the face.
