Grade school education (8/9 year olds) questions
This goes out to anyone with a child currently or recently in grade school,
or if you can remember your own 3rd grade experience...

Do you have standardized testing in your district for the 3rd grade?

Or did you go through standardized testing at this age?

Meaning a rigorous series of tests over a period of days (math, reading comprehension, writing, science and social studies)

Yup. They were called Iowa tests back in '70.

Ask Earmuffs... he only passed the tests a couple of years ago. Cool

RE: Grade school education (8/9 year olds) questions
I have one kid in elementary & one high school.

In Ontario we have standardized province wide testing in grade 3, 6 and 9 called EQAO testing (don't remember what it stands for.)

But the tests don't actually effect the students' grades, it's actually used to measure how good a job the school is doing, and the scores are made available to the parents.

Last year at my younger son's school, 80% of the students in grade 3 were at or above the provincial standard for reading & writing, but only 40% were at or above the standard in math, for example.

Not when I was 8-9, I think. I don't really remember.

But I live in Mass., so we had MCAS testing with regularity. My son liked it because it meant no homework on MCAS days. I think it's a waste of money and student time.

It is now PARCC testing. We can opt out here, but I am trying to figure out what that means as far as what her days will look like since they spend so much time teaching and administering the test.

I hate that they devote so much important class time to this test!

They are useful in identifying learning disabilities early. Also talented and gifted. Also give you a sense of strengths and weaknesses and areas for improvement. All in all I think they're a good thing if used properly.

The ITED, iirc. The Iowa tests of educational development.

Yes, I took them and my kids also took standardized tests though they started much younger. The whole goal of teachers had become to get kids to do well on the tests. I don't blame the teachers, it's what they were tasked with.

See here they are the bruises some were self-inflicted and some showed up along the way. - JF
