The difference between prayer and masturbation - is when a guy is through masturbating - he has something to show for his efforts.

RE: Great quotes
A long time of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises a formidable cry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides.Time makes more converts than reason. ~ Thomas Paine, Common Sense

He was talking at the time of the British governance in the Colonies but I think it is just as applicable with regards to religion and the move towards secularism.

“I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man’s reasoning powers are not above the monkey’s.”~Mark Twain
“Ocean: A body of water occupying about two-thirds of a world made for man - who has no gills.”~ Ambrose Bierce

At the time Sinclair was fighting the government bureaucrats to change the way our food, especially meat, was being handled and processed. Large corporations resisted the additional expenses of sanitation and bribed law makers NOT to change the status quo. “Being paid not to understand.”

Another example that comes to mind is the ongoing battle in Wall Street to change the HFT (High Frequency Trading) rules that allows scalpers with ultra fast computers to front-run other people’s buy and sell orders. These HFT folks are making billions a year and one after another testify in hearings that what they do provides “liquidity” (something good) to the markets where in reality it only adds volume (something neutral). Meanwhile they fight tooth and nail to prevent new competitors who are trying to establish fair exchanges from being approved by the powers that be (SEC) so it won’t cut into their profits. “Being paid not to understand.”

I think Warren Buffett can be hilarious and poignant at the same time when it comes to managing businesses.
