Greetings from a lifelong atheist
I say this with pride but without a shred self-superiority. I celebrate all people of good will including those of faith, those without, and those in transit.

I've been listening to the podcast since I first was aware of it. I "met" Seth through YouTube ("Story of Suzy", I think) and now it's high time I introduce myself to this community.

I am a middle-aged PhD academic of Human Genomics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I was raised a Roman Catholic in an idyllic New York City bedroom suburb of New Jersey, where I walked to church, attended catechism school, and innocently read the bible (kids' version) as a work of fiction. I thought of it as I did Fairy Tales and felt no animosity towards the religion, nor my neighbors and family; they were and remain the kindest and most supportive people I've ever known. I realized that god didn't exist as part and parcel of the realization that Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny didn't exist. It just made sense to the 9 year old me, and I've never wavered.

That's a quick primer. I plan to lurk for a spell on the boards to get the feel and vibe and I hope to make a positive impact with my posts in the future

Thanks Seth for providing this forum; I hope to speak with you one day on your podcast. Might I suggest a topic (at the risk of having missed it in the past)?

Atheists who have been atheists from childhood: why didn't the god thing stick?
My answer, I was born a scientist and a skeptic. It's as simple as that.

Hello, ReciprocalHokie. I'm also a lifelong atheist.

I recently gave my own story in this thread, if you're interested:-

Back atcha ReciprocalHokie... long time, non-Theist. Thumbsup

The forum is quite a mixed batch; a few in-transit folk here, a Theist or two, and of course, it's an umbrella for the broadly, self defined Agnostic/Atheist - both in and out of the closet. We're a fairly laid back community, though we do have our moments of excitement with the occasional troll -always fun and educational.

Hope to hear you share your insights.

Welcome to the forum. Smile

I think in the end, I just feel like I'm a secular person who has a skeptical eye toward any extraordinary claim, carefully examining any extraordinary evidence before jumping to conclusions. ~ Eric ~ My friend ... who figured it out.

Welcome. Nice to have more scientists.

I am a lifelong atheist. I recall when I was about age 9, sitting in Sunday school, thinking "Do they really believe this stuff?". I also have a memory of being embarrassed for them.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

Howdy 1/Hokie.

Breathing - it's more art than science.
