..............

What purpose does it serve to pass a law that's only followed by the law abiding citizen --- who isn't the problem in the first place?????

.....

I suspect it's so hand wringers can say "We're DOING SOMETHING!!!!"....

.....

....

Did you guys read the article? A database would make the tracing centre's work of identifying the place of purchase of a particular gun used in a crime a lot easier. Currently they perform the traces by hand and they *still* bring criminals to book.

How is knowing who legally purchased a firearm going to help convict the criminal who steals said firearm - then uses it in a criminal manner????

....

Uh -- it's not???

....

No shit..

right now - 99 percent of the guns in the US have NO federal tracking of any kind.... (I seriously doubt most people here know what happens to the ATF form 4473 that's filled out at time of purchase -- or what a NICS check really does)

If you start registering all firearms sold starting today - into a federal firearms database --- it'll be a hundred years or so before HALF of the guns in the US will be in that database......

What you want - is for EVERYONE to line up and register their firearms....

Right....

Sure...

That'll happen.....

Ask Canada....

Apples and oranges.

First, remove the suicides from those numbers.

go check the link. 34 homicides, 78 suicides, and 2 accidental deaths.

The counter argument is "how many times does brandishing or showing you have a gun prevent a crime" because it is often under reported. This is because it is often a crime in itself. Smile

By definition - brandishing is illegal -- as the definition is to show a gun for the purpose of intimidation.

Showing a gun -- welllll...........

If a guy pulls a knife on you and you pull out your gun, tell him to put away the knife, drop it, leave, (ect) - you've shown your gun -- but in a legal manner.....

...

But yeah -- by extrapolation - hundreds of thousands of crimes don't happen - because somebody (even cops) pulled out a gun - and didn't shoot anybody.....
