RE: GunTTA: Will hollow points go through walls?
Best way to find out is to test it out.
Oh, a .38 will go through an interior wall to the outside.
My brother almost got shot in the head, foolishly showing his ex-wife how to decock a revolver. Not really sure it was an accident. Drinking Beverage
hehehehe...I said, "decock." hehehehe

It was just a fucking apple man, we're sorry okay? Please stop the madness Laugh out load

His results, in brief:

EDIT: Ack, it didn't paste right. Better if you follow the link and find the table he created toward the bottom of the page. The .380 he tested was FMJ, though, FWIW.

That's for a .223, not a 9mm, but even so, it's informative. A .223 typical generates around 1,000 foot pounds, whereas a 9mm is around 400-450 (depending on load type, of course), so you can extrapolate from there.
Good link, thanks.

Thanks.

I'm still thinking the HP shrapnel wouldn't go through the wall.

Nope - the 9mm JHP went through the first wall and penetrated the second.

I'm not sure. HPs are designed to expand in a more "liquid" medium, of course, so I'm not sure what kind of expansion or fracturing you'd get from hitting drywall instead. Then, of course, even if it does fully penetrate without deforming, there's still the question of how much kinetic energy it will have after passing thru the wall.

Hmmm.

Disconcerting then.

This reinforces my decision to get a 12 gauge.

I guess this is best asked here to you, KC, then say, "Ask a Theist": does owning a gun make you feel more safe? I automatically thought you had posted this thread without looking much, since you posted your thread of Christmas presents...

The only time when being near a gun, I was near a police officer. My views are different, due to that. Do you think you might have viewed guns differently if you were born elsewhere than the States?

If you do, be sure to go with smaller shot. The guy tested 00 buck on the wall as well, and it also penetrated.

Just speculating here, mostly, but I would think that somewhere around #4 shot would be best for home defense if wall penetration is a concern. Maybe someone else knows more.

Just look at the test results. The 9mm JHPs went through the first wall completely and still had plenty of kinetic energy.
