RE: Happy March 1st!
Before I’m banned for mega-necroposting, bear with me a sec…

… I’ll be missing spring – again! – this year and spring is my most most favourite season, so indulge me and accept this cute little martenitsa-fied Cthulhu as a token of my sincere wishes for a wonderful spring Shy

Also don't forget that tomorrow starts what I always thought was one of the weirdest religious rituals out there. Wink

Downunder, March 1st has been hijacked by our media to represent the first day of Autumn—for cynical corporate marketing reasons. No

In the Southern hemisphere, the true first day of Autumn (or the Autumnal equinox) is actually March 20th or 21st.

Which one, Pablo? Do you mean Carnaval? We're supposed to be fasting here (or, to sound more modern, going full vegan ;-)).

SYZ, even a fake-ish celebration of autumn beats an even faker celebration of the bday of a god-dude who never existed in the first place. It's weird though, but why not. Do you get those wonderful, wonderful Japanese seasonal sweets?

And speaking of autumn and Japan... (I love autumn nearly as much as spring Yes )

RE: Happy March 1st!
I'm my culture The 1st of may is Saint David's Day (Welsh: Dydd Gŵyl Dewi, Welsh pronunciation: [dɨːð ɡʊɨl ˈdɛui]) is the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and falls on 1 March, the date of Saint David's death in 589. The feast has been regularly celebrated since the canonisation of David in the 12th century, though it is not a national holiday in the UK.

However, your celebrations sound more fun than mine!

(I love peonies so much!

by itself
the head is bowing...
peony! )

Jones, do you get to wear/eat leeks? Wink

(One of the first haikus I ever read was about leeks Yes

"The winter leeks
Have been washed white --
How cold it is!")

And speaking of saints and other inane things, here it is, the stupidest thing I read today:

“Easter is…
Joining in a birdsong,
Eying an early sunrise,
Smelling yellow daffodils,
Unbolting windows and doors,
Skipping through meadows,
Cuddling newborns,
Hoping, believing,
Reviving spent life,
Inhaling fresh air,
Sprinkling seeds along furrows,
Tracking in the mud.
Easter is the soul’s first taste of spring.” Facepalm

I'm positive not *all* religious folk are *this* infantile and I know I would've found this ludicrous even at my most deluded.

(28-02-2013 03:45 PM)Vera Wrote:  While I'm not a huge fan of traditions (actually, I believe that no tradition should be accepted just because "it's tradition" and that all of them should be reexamined and a lot - discarded), there are some which I kinda like. And this is one of them - celebrating the first day of March, as a symbol of the approaching spring.

So, on March 1st, folk in my minuscule and unimportant part of the world give each other martenitsi, small thingamajigs, made of red and white threads and meant to wish health and good luck to those we gave them to. We never buy them for ourselves, but only for friends and family and wear them until we see the first stork, swallow (but swallows being much tinier, storks are usually our best bet Tongue ), or the first blooming tree - all signs that spring is finally here.

So, this little and not quite necessary lecture concluded - happy first of march, guys! (Won't be giving them individually, 'cause I'm not sure those who didn't make the list would be able to live with the disappointment Tongue )
