RE: Has democracy ever been synonymous with freedom?
so, what if there was a guy named Mordechai Vanunu and the country he lived in had Nuclear Weapons. This country in order not to comply with world standards for nuclear weapons making simply denied that the country had nuclear weapons. This guy, Mordechai Vanunu then goes and proves and releases proof that his country has nuclear weapons. His country then puts him behind bars for 18 years with 11 of them being in solitary confinement.

Would you guys consider this particular country a democracy? Even the other people living in this country aren't allowed to acknowledge the existence of nuclear weapons in their country, in fact the people in that country aren't even allowed to comment on the example I mentioned above.

Then there is another country that legalizes torture and indefinite detention, and president sanctioned assassinations by the president. Another democracy????

Democracy fails do to mob rule.

Whether the U.S. is or is not a democracy is a moot point considering that I am not claiming there is no true democracy, I am claiming that there have been true democracies in the past and all of these have been total failures and had nothing to do with freedom at all.

Democracy isn't mob rule, it's more like a class dictatorship, the bourgeois rule over the proletarians. (you can probably get the hint on what kind of political system I like simply by my use of the words bourgeois and proletarians).

Ah the classic war of the classes. Thumbsup

The truth is any form of government must balance individual freedom with the freedom of society.

Well maybe. Communism fails when an oligarchy or "great leader" gain all of the power. Then you have to consider their focus on the working class. Which I think perpetuates the class struggle.

It may be better to realize that living in a society means you have to give up some individual freedoms to participate in the society. Figuring out how to balance societal needs with individual needs should be the most important focus.

At least that's how I feel.

Tow. ... basically tow the government/corporate line. Toe is a digit on your foot.

With a highly developed mixed market economy and a large welfare state, Denmark ranks as having the world's highest level of income equality, and has the world's seventh highest per capita income. It has frequently ranked as the happiest and least corrupt country in the world. The Kingdom of Denmark is a constitutional monarchy organised in the form of a parliamentary democracy.

Communism is not a form of government. Its a form of central planning economics... just as capitalism is. In USSR, communism was to socialism what capitalism is to democracy in the US. Both capitalism and communism are equally corruptible... it depends what systems are in place(or not) to regulate them.

A new type of thinking is essential if mankind is to survive and move to higher levels. ~ Albert Einstein
