Before Obama, I wasn't really at an age where I knew about politics besides what my mom had drilled into my head ("The Republican is always the good guy." I feel differently now). The only thing I remember about Bush was really Katrina because that was the only thing that directly influenced me and a little bit of Iraq. So for those of you who actually remember other presidents, I ask, are they always hated as much as Obama is? At least by the opposition? Just something I'm curious about . . .

Having some experience in US Presidents.....
I didn't know FDR, but my dad did....and my dad didn't like him at all ("dirty socialist").
Truman: did what had to be done. Drop the damn bomb and end the war; and fired McArthur
Eisenhower: "beige paint", but smartl NEUTRAL
Kennedy: on the surface, heroic. We didn't know about the current running below. Was killed before a decent record could be established. LIKED
Johnson: mostly a crook; but could get things done by working congress behind the scenes. Pretty much a coward. Had a chance to end VN, but didn't. DISLIKED
Nixon: very much a crook; got some things done, but a real creep. REALLY DISLIKED
Ford: place holder; pretty much a waste of space and time. Made a deal with Nixon to become pres. BORED
Carter: the single most inept person ever to hold the office; make US Grant look like a Rhodes scholar. LAUGHED
Reagan: one of the top three presidents; made deals as required, but never sacrificed principles. PROUD
Bush (1): smart, but is the perfect example of the Peter Principle. Survived by having competent advisors telling him what to do; did well with the 1st Gulf War. CONFUSED
Clinton: pure, perfect, and 100% filth. Was embarrassed by this creep...and his murderous spouse. DISGUSTED/SICKENED/EMBARRASSED
Bush (2): was the right man in the right place to get the county thru 9/11 (can't even begin to imagine what algore would have been like); second term was a complete bust. HAPPY; then DISAPPOINTED
Obama: incompetent, unconstitutional, unprepared, liar, fake, socialist, malignant narcissist. HATE!!!

IMHO

Bush was hated also.

Damned if you do and damned if you do nothing.

WATCosmos made the point that I was going to make.

The rest of the world (I speak for them) has pretty much the opposite view to RaisdCath.

Bear in mind that e.g. Europe's conservatives are generally more left-wing than the most lefty US Democrat.

Asia (from what I've seen and read) doesn't really do the 'personality politics' in the way that seems to be the case in the US. Judgements are made on results and in the cold light of history...
Bush's administration (not the man) has been ridiculed and the jury is still out on Obama's.

to signify this, i will now tell you that over here in Norway, Erna Solberg (not related to Petter Solberg in any way), announced that her party, named right (sounds more tactful in nowegian, BTW) would not for anything go for the american model on health care. not even the party named the advancement party, further to the right than right itself, would do that.

so, Norway's two most famously right-wing parties go for a far more left-wing health care system than america.

RE: Have Presidents Always Been Hated This Much?
This shit started with Clinton.

After having held power for 12 years so that rich cocksuckers could steal everything that wasn't nailed down under Reagan and Bush the Smarter the republicunts went stark raving nuts when their hands were pryed off the levers of power. After the shit they pulled on Clinton the democrats were in no mood to give Bush a break....and he made it easy by being the worst excuse for a president ever.

With Obama the hatred of all things democratic re-surfaced ( that would have been no different if Hillary had won) but they got the added bonus of a black president so they could really rile up the racist wing of the party.

As long as the media pays attention to the lunatic fringe it will remain this way.

And since the lunatic fringe is currently the main driving force for the ideology of one of the major parties, the media is going to keep paying attention to them. Weeping

Yes. Bush was hated by the left and Clinton despised by the right. Obama has a 45% approval rating. That's pretty damn high for a president with a bad economy, high un/underemployment, trillion dollar deficits, and no further elections to try and win.

It probably doesn't help that he probably only got in because Romney was a fucking hack.
If the republicans were able to offer up a decent candidate the election may have been a little closer.
So it's probably a bit of "I only voted for you because you were the lesser of two evils, but I still fucking hate you".

RE: Have Presidents Always Been Hated This Much?
Was McCain a fucking hack, too?

The republicans keep trying to get more and more of a declining demographic. Old, dumb white guys. Any suggestion that they try to appeal to groups outside of that demographic brings out the Klan hoods and rebel flags. The alliance between big business and religious nuttery is breaking down on them and they haven't a fucking clue what to do except insist "we have to be even crazier."

They are putting themselves in the shitter.
