Hello, My Introduction and e-mails from The Thinking Atheist
Hi Everyone,
I am new to this whole scene, and am still struggling with my past beliefs, or should i say past wishes. For instance i still have feelings of hoping that there is something after Death and my family members are waiting and i will see them again. I know that this is pretty much impossible, and i do believe in science and it's findings 100 percent. I apologize that despite this, I'm still not quite their. I love when my friend comes round and we have discussions and debates on how to put the world to rights. I say i love it because i learn a lot from him. I am not a highly educated person and so there is a lot that i don't know or understand, saying that, I'm not stupid either, just above average. This is why i love to listen to Seth's podcasts and people like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens etc. I do have my bad days and my brain can sometimes be in knots, but I'm still trying to learn what i can.

I have spent the last $ years stuck in bed having many operations on my leg. Mainly because i got an infection in the femur after 1 of my ops. As quickly as i can so you dont get bored with me already. This is how i got to my present state.

24th Sept 2009 - Operation to Break right Femur, rotate it and reset. (Because i had both legs broken and rotated in 1992 due to a congenital hip defect, but, my right leg was over rotated)

20th Nov 2009 - Plate came off, so another operation to fix a longer Plate and more screws.

Sept 2010 Rushed to A+E in agony unable to move. Very severe infection. My specialist didn't know what to do and wanted to remove my leg.

Also Sept 2010 New specialist with expertise in micro surgery took over my case. Operation to remove plate and 3 inches of infected mushy bone pushed ant-biotic paste in the new ends, fit a frame to my leg and put me on a Vancomycin drip for 6 hours a day for 4 months.

Jan 2011 Vancomycin destroyed my immune system completely, so had to stop and hope it had done enough to the infection.

Apr 2011 operation to remove frame and fit bone ends together. Attached 2 plates and 28 screws

Nov 2012 operation to remove plates and screws in rediness for leg lengthening operation once the screw holes have filled with new bone.

Feb 2013 operation to re-break leg and fit a lengthening frame.

After several falls we get to today.I cannot bend my leg, nor can i straighten it completely, i am in constant agony but have managed to gradually lengthen my leg my almost 3 inches.
I have now stopped and have to wait for the bone to thicken. Then i have a slightly different set-up to allow the new bone to flex slightly. This strengthens the bone. If we just let it set as it is, it will be very brittle, and seeing as i now have osteopenia, which is the precursor to Osteoporosis, that would probably cause another infection and bone that would not heal.
Once it has fully thickened i can have the frame removed.
That will be around another year and a half's time.

So, that's me. I used to think that when i died i would be better and be with my relatives in heaven. I now know that that's not going to happen and hopefully i can get better now and do more to take control of my life now. I long to make something of myself. Before, i wouldn't try very hard and just try to get through this life so i could wait for the next life. Although i did try to get work, as i am a Security Trained Chauffeur but because i owned up to having a disability, i never so much as got an interview. I may try the U.S. You seem t be more open to giving people a chance.

Anyway, I'm sorry i have gone on a bit. Opiates tend to make you do that (They are legal and prescribed.lol).

Any questions just ask, I'm very open, and am un-shockable and don't get embarrassed.

Oh, when i get e-mails from here, did you know it says
"Be careful! This sender has failed our fraud detection checks."
That's on Hotmail.

Best wishes to everyone and i hope you will accept me into your clan.

Howdy Mike. Sounds like you've been to hell and back with that leg (see what I did there? Wink )

Welcome to the forum. Everyone gets accepted here, but plenty of people realize they don't want to be after they see what a bunch of nuts we are. I've got a gut feeling you'll fit in just fine.

Welcome, Mike. I feel your pain. No, really. Yes

I think I've had 13 operations on my leg, had the bone infection, had the Vancomycin (or 'battery acid' as I lovingly call it). And the opiates. Thumbsup

Welcome to the forum...I hope things get better and better with that leg - chronic pain sucks, a lot.
