Help understanding A.D B.C
How did the a.d b.c thing start? If you lived in the year 2000 b.c and one year went by would it be 1999? How does that work?

This dating system was devised in 525, but was not widely used until after 800.

RE: Help understanding A.D B.C
Anno Domini = AD "In the year of Our Lord"

BC "Before Christ"

There are numerous dating systems.
Juian, Gregorian, bla bla bla and bla.

I get that what ad and bc mean, I'm just wondering if you lived in 2000 bc what year you would say you lived in. We use this measure of time now just wondering before this style of time measurement what was used.

There were many systems, but none of them used BC or AD, since there was no referent.
A typical system was to refer to the year of the reign of the king or the number of years since some big event..

If I remember right, Romans dated years from the estimated founding of Rome using AUC as an abbreviation for the latin phrase "from the founding of the city". Greeks, at least sometimes, counted the number of olympic games and the years between (e.g. the third year of the 50th olympiad). Many cultures would specify the year of the reign of the local king or the year some significant event occurred. Jews count from the supposed creation of the world; Islam starts with Mohammed.

So how you dated things basically depends on where you lived.

Here's some more junk about other systems. I think the Jews always had a calendar of their own.
