I would call it tribalism. Same as religion or any other given ideology. People don't define themselves over their identity but over something supposedly greater than themselves. Which ultimately leads to exclusivness and the loss of identity.

Don't really see how patriotism is simply provincialism (or tribalism for that matter) on a larger scale. Patriotism and nationalism cover something much more abstract which includes large landmasses, imagined communities (Benedict Anderson) and so on.

There is not really a "loss" of identity from multiple people having their identity build around the same ideology. There might be less diversity in their individual identities, but I would argue that they all have them.
Even when closely identifying with the same ideology people will still have different life-stories, experiences and ways of identifying with the ideology.

I view patriotism like I do most other cultural phenomena that can mobilize people and inspire certain actions and behavior: It's there, it's part of human society and what matters most is whether it moves individuals and societies in good or bad directions (open to subjective interpretations).

Bill Maher mentioned that Democrats should reclaim patriotism and try to get paying taxes and ensuring healthcare for everybody included in the pool of things labeled "patriotic". I think that's a good approach.

RE: Heritage/Patriotism/Culture
Patriotism is almost a bad word to me now, even though that's not really fair to the idea. And I say that because the right has bastardized it so much. Patriotism apparently means never criticizing any military action and kissing the asses of every military, police, and fire department member. I have no problem giving respect to all of them, but the right has turned it into worship and they lash out if you dare question anything regarding those. Which is still hilarious to me that so called small government supporters worship a segment of the government so much.

I love my country, I love being an American, but these rah rah "Amurica is da best DAM country in da world!" people are just scary; not to mention it's obvious most of them have barely left their state much less visited another country.

If that's the only definition you will allow then, yes, it's a bad word. Oddly enough, it's not the only definition of the word. I've donated body parts to the maintenance and endurance of this country. When I retired from the USN more than half my life had been spent in the military. Never got the idea that we were perfect. And having visited 72 countries while I was on active duty I realized that there probably isn't any such country.

I don't think it's the only definition of the word; in fact I don't even think that IS patriotism; however it's what is passed by the majority of the right now, at least their most vocal mouthpieces.

Heritage/Patriotism/Culture
DNA wise I am Norwegian, Icelandic, Swedish, German, Scottish, Danish and Irish. Pretty white, really. I will not apologize for being white which seems to be a trend these days. Currently I am American, also an Army veteran and retired fireman. I love the country as far as there are a lot of freedoms and wide open spaces to enjoy. But I HATE the assholes in charge. Fuck them. I am sick of science deniers and religion. Trump is a jackass douchbag and so is Pence. I will fly the Icelandic Flag until Trump and his idiot gang are gone.

Your heritage, your ancestors and your nationality may be the important to you, but to everyone else it's about as exciting as that dream you had last night.

We don't really give a fuck, and we're just being polite by listening....

Frankly, it's boring.

I'd expect my heritage to be just as uninteresting to you...

I don't find it boring. I like hearing about the various backgrounds and ancestry of the different people I talk to on here.
