Welcome cat lady Wink

Theism is to believe what other people claim, Atheism is to ask "why should I".

Do you truly love them, though? Even the ugly ones?

RE: Hi, everyone! Rebecca Ripple here.
Heya to all these new replies! Thank you for the warm welcome. Smile

Yes, TheGulegon, I do love all animals. Just, maybe not quite as much as cats and dogs... Seriously, though, I would treat any animal with respect and kindness. I never wear fur, I only buy organic milk and eggs, and I hereby vow to sign any petition I see against puppy mills, the fur trade and other forms of animal cruelty. Meow!!

I even tried going vegan twice, but when you don't (or can't) cook, it's not so easy to avoid ALL animal-based products. I can easily survive without buying fur, wool, leather and suede, but I'm a Type II Diabetic (among other things) and I have to eat what my body needs. I wish I knew how to be vegan properly, but I just can't manage that on top of everything else right now. My heart's in it, but it'll have to wait.

And yes, I was raised Jewish, but I've been an atheist for several years. When I told my mom I was an atheist, I promised her that I'd still consider myself Jewish by heritage, though not by belief, and I do. But I don't believe the Torah any more than I believe the New Testament. Smile

Thank you to those of you who have offered kind words about my little kitty. A friend recently told me that she is still with me in spirit, watching over me. I wasn't sure what to say, but I thanked him. I have to admit, the thought brings tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat, even now. I like to think she still exists somehow, in more than the loving memories of her devoted humans. But the truth is, I can't believe that. It's one of those things that makes me want to believe in spirits and souls. Still, the truth of it is, she isn't suffering anymore. She was very sick for quite a while before she passed away.

I'm sorry I keep ending on a sad note. I never mean to depress anyone. I hope I haven't.

Quote:I'm Rebecca, a 28-year-old writer living in Massachusetts. I was raised in a reformed Jewish household, but I've been an atheist since I was in high school, with one brief exception back in 2008, when I took a few months' break and believed in the Baptist version of Christianity. That period of faith was over before 2008 was. Heh. Smile

Hi Rebecca
Welcome to TTA.
I'm another Jew here. (or is it ex-jew ?)
I used to be an orthodox super pious Jew for 7 golden years.
Then I discovered philosophy and re ignited my love for science.
Slowly but surely all my previous religious fundamentalism began to fall apart and eventually I has to admit I was an atheist.
These days I love being an apostate - long live the heretics, they are the most reasonable people ! Big Grin

Reformed Judaism is kind of the soft version - cant be that bad.
Its kind of do what you want and call it Judaism ???
