Hi from VA
Hello, everyone! I am not new to atheism, but I guess I am relatively new to labeling myself as an atheist. I actually prefer "secular humanist" because I would rather describe myself based on what I do believe than what I don't but atheist is accurate too. I come from a minimally Catholic family (rarely went to church) but I have never really been a believer or practiced a religion. I'm a physician but I did some graduate work in evolutionary biology for a couple years before medical school, and I still enjoy reading about nature and evolution.

The recent elections and the campaigns leading up to them have prompted me to read a lot more about the influence of the religious right in our society, and works by authors like Dawkins and Harris. I have been becoming gradually more outspoken about my beliefs (outside of work, anyway), and finding others who have similar beliefs can be challenging.

I am married with two kids. My husband was subjected to 12 years of Catholic education, which cured him of any religious beliefs he may have otherwise had.

I'm looking forward to having more people I can converse with openly.

Jess

Oops, sorry for the confusion, most of the boards where I post are predominantly Americans. My name is Jess. Kingschosen already explained it but yes, I currently live in the state (officially a commonwealth, actually) of Virginia in the US. The abbreviation for Virginia is VA.

It's ok, I was just kidding.

It is my duty as a rest-of-the-worlder to highlight all Murikano-centricity.

and the opportunity to highlight KC's lack of irony was just a bonus.

I thank you.
