Hello!

The first revolt is against the supreme tyranny of theology, of the phantom of God. As long as we have a master in heaven, we will be slaves on earth.

I'm Greg, an American graduate student at the University of Florida. In addition to an M.A. in Linguistics from UF, where I am currently pursuing my PhD in the same field, I also hold a B.A. in Spanish from Florida Gulf Coast University. My affinity for studying languages began in high school, and in addition to Spanish, I also have what I would call a solid foundational knowledge of French, Italian, Latin, German, and classical Greek.

I have developed the rather unique hobby of translating/adapting song lyrics between the various languages that I know. The primary challenge is to convey the original meaning as faithfully as possible while making it all fit the rhyme scheme and melody of the song. It's rarely easy, to be sure, but the results are always rewarding! For one thing, it's a rather fun way to exercise and expand my command of the relevant languages!

I am also an advocate of English orthographic reform for the benefit of children and non-native speakers. I believe that the regularization of standard spelling would contribute greatly to literacy and education in Anglophone countries and that English's unprecedented status as a global lingua franca makes this issue more relevant than ever before.

For the past couple of years, I have become fascinated by the philosophy of apologetics and counter-apologetics, and it is largely as a consequence of what I learned from that fascination that I personally shifted from deism to atheism. YouTube is my main source, and one of my favorite passtimes has become watching a good theist/atheist debate (e.g. Nye vs. Ham). I've also become a fairly regular viewer of content from YouTubers like Aron Ra, Steve Shives, King Crocoduck, Thunderf00t, etc.

Politically, I've come to feel somewhat stuck between a rock and a hard place. I am currently a registered Republican, firmly supporting fiscal conservatism and small government, but my social views are actually quite liberal, and I am particularly concerned about the encroachment of Christian fundamentalism into public policy (which is, of course, a disproportionately Republican feature). The fact that Donald Trump has gotten as far as he has in his bid for the presidency is, I think, a big embarrassment to the GOP.

I am seriously considering a re-registering as an Independent. If Trump wins the nomination, I may be compelled to vote for a Democrat, though I will take no pleasure in doing so. The Democrats have vices of their own, since as I understand it, they tend to be big spenders who take political correctness too far, but really, it'll probably be the lesser of two evils.

I decided to look up this forum after quite a while of enjoying Seth Andrews' archived podcasts on YouTube.

Hi, Greg! Always nice to meet a fellow Gator fan. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to TTA.

We will disagree about orthographic reform. I'm an orthopreservationist. Big Grin

RE: Hi from a Geeky Floridian
Thanks for the many greetings, guys!

Aliza, I hope you won't be too disappointed to learn that, although I do live and learn on the Gators' turf, my attitude towards sports is essentially one of complete apathy. I'm sure we'll find plenty else to talk about, though!

Chas, I'd be interested in your reason(s) for orthographic conservatism, and since you felt it worthwhile to mention your stance, I'd love to engage with you in an exchange on the matter (mutually respectful, of course). I've been thinking of starting a spelling reform thread to get a feel for the general skeptical/humanist perspective on it.

NOTE: Member, Tomasia uses this site to slander other individuals. He then later proclaims it a joke, but not in public.
I will call him a liar and a dog here and now.
