As a matter of fact -- yes.....

I did text only BBS (bulletin board service) for many years before the internet existed......

My first computer was operated in DOS -- Windows didn't even exist at the time....

The BBS crowd was accessed by telephone modem - and generally only one person at a time could use it... I knew of one local site that actually paid for four hardline phones - so 4 users (5 is the sysop was on) could "chat" at the same time.... quite a deal at the time...

My first modem was a 9.6 k..... When we got 28.8s we couldn't believe how fast shit went....

Big Grin
Don't the bbs count as internet and surfing them as"being online" ? Forums these days are just an upgraded bbs after all.
I could be wrong-, but I think it counts.

And

Ahh...the wonders of dial up internet...
You had it ok, slow internet and the pages were not heavy to load.
Speed was like 3x when you started.
When I started surfing the internet, I had to plug my mobile via USB to use it as modem, and set it up like dial up.
Imagine surfing the internet with GPRS speeds(around 30 kbit/sec)
That was a dark time for me

I don't really like going outside.
It's too damn "peopley" out there....

I think technically the internet began to exist in 1983 when TCP/IP was activated on the ARPANET. The World Wide Web, however, did not exist until the mid 90's with the invention and adoption of HTTP.

Nah. Moore's Law just makes us seem really, really old.

You had DOS? I had PDP-11 and CP/M.

I used a PDP 11/23 with RSTS/E on an SJM. Type in "SHUSERS" (show users). Since it is a standalone (Single Job Monitor), it replies, "NOBODY BUT YOU!". Gotta hand it to DEC, their system guys had a sense of humor. Sort of. I was used to programming in FORTRAN on mainframes. When I got to the mini, I had all kinds of trouble compiling, until I found out that I couldn't use the tab key, but had to actually type all the spaces to get over to the first column to type in the code.

CP/M was a better OS, but Bill Gates and IBM pretty much trashed it. Kind of like VHS and Sony BetaMax.

Sorry for the Hijack. Nothing to see here you youngsters, just some old monochrome monitor line programmers grousing about teh "good old days". Tongue

My first computer was a Dell with dial up Internet.

I can vouch for the rumors that we had to write using paper and pen, put it in an envelope, actually *lick* the envelope and stamp, and have the USPS deliver the message.

History on wheels, right here, folks. Older than dirt.

We have enough youth. How about looking for the Fountain of Smart?
