I come from a devout Mormon family and I have five other siblings. We were pretty isolated from the rest of the world. It was always church, church, church, and a smattering of extra church functions.

However, I turned out to be a trans female, another sibling is a trans male, and the baby of the family is a lesbian. Three out of six kids are LGBT. Two others are VERY devout and the third is just an aloof male teenager who does his own thing.

Oh wow, Jojorumbles! My daughter is also trans. I'm always happy to connect with someone in the transgender community. When my daughter came out to me three years ago I beat myself up for being a horrible mother. It wasn't until after I did almost 8 months of research that I realized my parenting had nothing to do with it. This is some of the peer reviewed research I came across.

How did your Mormon parents deal with this news? Even as a non religious person it wasn't easy to take but I wanted my daughter to be happy. That's more important than anything.

Interesting take, but I wonder how large a number the extremist radfems actually claim. In any case they are definitely a dying breed as with most thing younger people seem to be much more inclusive.

Thank you for that interesting article. It gets very complicated. Most transgender people simply want to live their lives in peace especially after living with such discord between mind and body. I'm no expert but everything I've read points to the brain being tipped to the opposite gender in specific areas. It's much easier to study the brain with the new types of scans available so scientists are more able to view the anomalies.

In the 6th week the fetus is washed with testosterone or estrogen which affects the brain of the fetus but sometimes the hormones released aren't matching the chromosomes so a female fetus gets some testosterone or the opposite occurs with a male baby. I don't understand why feminists have such a hard time believing this could happen though I find it almost amusing that feminists and conservative fundamentalist christians have a common view of transgender people.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19341803

Some women are born without viginas so are they not women? Not all women have standard female chromosomes so are they not invited to feminist rallies? Someone has a female brain in a male body so they are excluded too?

Or how about people who have both genitals, the intersex community? What would these feminists do with these people? And if people are born intersex why is it so impossible for other "mistakes" to happen. The brain is simply another organ in the body, very complicated organ but still, things happen.

(Like I did)

I know a woman who was married and had three kids before she could admit to herself that she's gay.

Heck, I nominally consider myself straight, but depending on how you want to split hairs, I could definitely say I'm bi. Still, that doesn't stop me from reflexively identifying as straight.

I largely agree on a healthy scale, however, drawing and quartering someone or an animal for fun is mentally ill. That is unnatural, just one example.
