Yes it is. It's just that the more skill you have, the more you can isolate it from the chance. Also, the longer you play, the more your skill comes into play relative to random chance (law of large numbers, and whatnot).

So, a good player who plays well for a long time should do statistically much better than average, but that doesn't mean they can't have a run of bad luck for an hour, or even a night.

I do slots, because they’re fun. I have never “won” but I usually don’t lose much either.

The lights and sounds, give a jolt of endorphins, which has been found to be addictive.

But I’ll call bullshit on the rigged part. You have to play smart and know when walk away to a different machine.

I agree, all the games can be a ton of fun. Having gone to so many Vegas conventions, I spent some time checking into the rationale, as well as playing around a bit.

Here you can find odds and strategies: https://wizardofodds.com/games/

Oh, and there are ways to play craps that increase the likelihood of winning. The above link should have them...

Yeah craps is the man’s game. He usually does pretty good too, but there are times the dice aren’t in anyone’s favor and he will leave. Slots have the worst odds — it’s alwsys been that way.

I’m not crying over losing $80 for 6 hours of entertainment, I’ve wasted more than that on a terrible meal.

Rigged may not be the right word, but they are programmed to pay out less than they take in, and to dole the wins out just often enough to keep people playing them.

I don’t really see that as a problem though.

Like I said elsewhere I’ve walked into a casino and played all day on 80 bucks and had fun too. Other times...same 80 is half gone in 10 minutes, but usually before that point I’ll have stopped.

I only spend what I can truly afford to lose. I limit my time on a machine for a number of pulls (usually 7) I bet low to begin with, and increase only if I win, and never by a lot. If I go 7 pulls without getting anything, I walk away. Plenty of machines...

If I’m winning...I actually sometimes get bored with a machine and will actually walk away from a streak. Because I want to play something else.

I usually get to a point where I am playing with casino’s money so if I walk out with my whatever I walked in with and a few hours has passed I’m totally happy to suck down a few free drinks, while pretending to play. Otherwise I always say no to the free beverages, because I don’t like feeling chained to the machine waiting for them to return.

There are ongoing legal battles over this - whether poker is a game of chance or a game of skill.

The chance is what cards you get - the skill is what you do with them and how you comport yourself.

There is always a chance of bad cards, the really good player wins with crap because of their behavior. It's not just a "poker face" - it is all sorts of involuntary body language that must be controlled and/or purposefully projected. While you do that, you need to take everything about your opponents in and evaluate it. On a tournament level, much of the game actually has little to do with the cards.

The word is "weighted". In the US there are laws about how the machines are to be weighted, and inspectors show up in casinos frequently. Not in Indian casinos though, they have their own laws.

Usually the slot tournaments have buy ins, so while you are playing against the machine and other players, you don’t have to keep feeding money into the machine if you lose a few hands, your share of the prize is reduced.

Yep, they also used to invite you to play slot tournies for free as comp, I have played some of those.

The correct answer, I would say, is "both".

Little perhaps, but not eliminated entirely. I understand ideas about value bets, position, chip count, and a tight-aggressive playing style. All of these things are very important, but there are times when the cards absolutely do matter.
