I'm sure a lot of symbolism is intentional, I mean you don't write a character's death as a crucifixion in this day and age without attempting to invoke religious imagery for example. Beyond that, literature belongs to the public not to the author. If you can find Christian undertones in a book and use evidence from within the work to support your find then it's there whether the author intended or not. I don't think it makes the work any less valid if it's unintentionally brilliant, it adds to the magic really Tongue
Well, it's pretty obvious that some symbols are placed there intentionally. But I remember being in classes that analyzed books to death, every single word have 2, 3, 4 meanings, and I often felt it was forced and artificial. Come on, did the author really have a full agenda behind choosing one word over another? Maybe, but then maybe not...

English is not my first language. If you think I am being mean, ask me. It could be just a wording problem.

RE: How do you read?
I tend to read for the enjoyment of it, and try not to get bogged down in the significance of the author's message, because more often than not, I've seen authors who come out and say "Uh...that's not at all what I was saying...please stop interpreting my book." (or words to that effect) Such interpretations are the height of subjectivity and can lead to arguments based on nothing more than differing opinion.

So I try to read books, not read into them.

For God so loved the world that he arranged for everyone to both have free will and to suffer the terrible consequences of making the wrong choice. Kind of a dick move, God.
