RE: How many books have you read
I remember someone (maybe Joyce himself?) suggesting that since it took James Joyce 17 years to write Finnegans Wake, you should spend that long reading it if you want to read it properly. The problem with this logic is that Joyce only wrote 4 books of fiction in his entire life, plus a play and a few poems -- and it's ridiculous to suggest that a person only read 4 books in his/her life. I have read hundreds for sure, and probably over a thousand -- including Finnegans Wake, of which I understood very little.
