Yep, it's not something that people would expect if they haven't read the book. The Swedish film actually hints at that part of the storyline because the girl admits that she is a boy, and there is scene where the camera pans down for a split second to show a scar on her nether regions where a penis would be.

My interests change a lot so I do read outside my comfort zone occasionally.
