How peaceful is the 2000s-2010s compared to the rest of history?
Stephen Pinker argues this is the most peaceful time ever, what do you think?

I dunno..
20th century sure as shit wasn't so strike that out. 19th century had the Napoleonic Wars, Crimean War, that whole France v Prussia shit, American Civil War and a whole bunch of imperialism shit. 18th century had the Quadruple Alliance War, 7 Year War, American Revolution and the French revolution. 17th century had the whole Ottoman Empire conflict shit, 80 year war, some shit in England. 16th century wasn't much better. 15th had the fall of Granada and Byzantium, the Hundred Year War, War of Roses. The 14th... well... the plague, need I say more? 13th, Genghis Khan. 12th, 2nd Crusade, Barbarossa, 3rd Crusade. 11th, 1st Crusade. etc.. etc.. It's all pretty downhill from here.

Yes I think I do agree with him. For now.

I've seen the case... It's even in relation to 80s/90s.. There's less world violence, murder, etc. than there was before.

Might of been more peaceful in hunter gather times... Ya know at least in terms of inter human conflicts. Since external conflicts were greater.

Hmm... Which criteria does Pinker use to measure peace?

Aggregate numbers, homicides, killed in wars other factors adjusted to total population. So in a population of 100 1 homicide is worse than 50 in a population of 500,000.

Seems reasonable. Thanks!

I don't know if I agree that it is the most peaceful span of ten years ever. I would perhaps agree that the last thirty or so have been more peaceful, in aggregate, compared to most other years.

Pinker's stance is more there seems to be a general trend towards less violence as time moves forward. It seems to hold up when with the data he supplies but like any trend cannot with total accuracy predict the future. It does seem positive though.

It feels as though we are out of the dark ages, but I think it would be a mistake to be too comfortable. Currently there seems to be less suffering, however I believe humanity is more powerful than ever before and in the blink of an eye when the line is crossed we can be worse off than ever before- worse than the true dark ages itself. That looming thought keeps me from getting too comfortable... that and the Ukraine, Gaza, deadly virus' and as well as the constant missing and crashing planes.

It is safer compared to the past. I mean you can still get robed but robberies and murder were more common back then (and I though our generation was bringing america downDodgy )
