How were old testament people saved?
We're told we can't be saved unless we believe in Jesus. But what about all the people before Jesus? Did they all go to hell? When I was a kid I asked my pastor about it and he told me that everyone in the OT who believed Jesus was coming were saved. That got me by as a kid but then what about the whole "he died for our sins" deal? I thought we couldn't get into heaven without Jesus dying and if OT people could be saved then what was the point?

Putting on my old theist cap here, I believe those that were in Sheol were taken to heaven after Jesus took the keys to hell. (From the Greek god Hades according to the gospel of Nicodemus)

I suppose Sheol was looked at as a holding spot until Jesus died and came for them. For 4,000 years apparently. Dodgy

You don't go to heaven, you just do a little better each time.

RE: How were old testament people saved?
Most Christians don't have an answer, and don't ask these kindl of questions. Too complicated and not important.

Standard answer is only Jews were saved. They were in covenant with God and all of their sacrifices and ceremony pointed to the sacrifice of Jesus, the lamb of God. Circumcision was the sign of the covenant, given first to Abraham. So while you had to be a faithful Jew and perform the works of the law, and not be a covenant breaker, it was faith in God (remember who is also Jesus Smile) that saved you. This is where Calvinism comes in. God chose his people. Non-Calvinists have no satisfactory answers.

Just more mumbo jumbo that ultimately makes no sense. Try reading the book of Hebrews. Crazy.

My money's on God just sending them to hell. Cause anything else would make too much sense and not be cruel enough.

Popcorn I put more thought into fiction than theists put into reality.

RE: How were old testament people saved?
I was always told that everyone who died up to that point just sort of chillaxed in some kind of holding chamber (Hades?) Then right after Jeebus died, he went down there to negotiate with the Nephilim, using his super-sexy powers of persuasive preaching on them, so they'd give up the souls that had been "saved." Jeebus then took all the saved souls with him when he ascended into heaven, and everyone else went to Gehenna (or "permanent, super-cereal, for-realsies Hell"). Of course, most of this story was pulled straight out of thin air, from an already extremely slim and nebulous narrative.

If we came from dust, then why is there still dust?

I very well could have my wires crossed here but Jews don't believe in a literal Hell, right?

So if the OT is their creation it would make sense that it wasn't explained.

Omg I totally read the title wrong. Facepalm what a blonde moment...sheesh.

Jewish people don't believe in "heaven" or "hell" at least in a literal way.

I don't think they ever really have.

I think it's more of an idea that very exceptionally good people see god...

Very, very bad people go to a pit or something...but not always.

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces

Or sometimes they go to Miami Beach.

Atheism is NOT a Religion. It's A Personal Relationship With Reality!
