She has a pet that is loyal to the family. This pet is not her friend. She might pretend and act as though they are friends, but she knows the pet is simply acting as if it's a machine. It's following code. It's loyal and will act in a loyal manner to the point of its own death.

In other words, it has no free will, no emotions for the girl and once the girl realizes this, then she'll begin to see that she's alone.

So it becomes a fight or flight.
Will she seek out new friends or retreat away into herself and her pet.
