How would you successfully eradicate the use of alcohol and cigarettes?
note: no answers saying that they'd just hook up society to cheaper and more readily available drugs.

Which methods do you think would be practical in eradicating the use of these drugs in society? (say, within the USA).

Are you crazy?
Why would you want to do that?

It's all we've got left!

Nothing.

You learn from your mistakes.
Prohibition anyone?

It wouldn't work. Drugs are still illegal and they aren't exactly difficult to get hold of. Plus anyone can make alcohol.

Good point, FSM, and since you're at the bar, can you make me one too?

Cheers

I'm with the others. Not only does prohibition not work, but I wouldn't want it to.

Stop trying to save us from ourselves.

You raise awareness and educate people about the side effects of excessive consumption, and let them make their own decision. Forcing it won't work, people need to decide for themselves that they don't want it.

PS: The Smooshmonster has nothing against alcohol or cigarettes, but wishes the flatmates would stop leaving their stinky ashtrays in the kitchen every morning for me to choke on.

RE: How would you successfully eradicate the use of alcohol and cigarettes?
I wouldn't....

I know people now spending 1/3 of their pay check on cigarettes--even though they can't buy food. Even if you said a single cigarette cost $100, there would still be people smoking--and probably many more in jail.

Alcohol, I don't find to be a problem. It can be a problem, but it has many uses other than just drinking--such as in food/cooking. And some alcohol apparently has some health benefits--even doctors have recommended to some in my family to drink some for their heart/sleeping--and some being the equivalent of a can of beer or a shot a day. Even someone making a carbonated drink at home with yeast will create some alcohol as a result. Of course I'm just referring to the drinking type that isn't used in industry.

And really, people know they could die from either--but the reasons behind why they smoke/drink still exist, so they do. So shy of eliminating the reasons why people drink/smoke, and it won't matter that much. Although I have had the same bottles of 750ml alcohol in my house that I bought last year, so it's not like banning it is good, some people like me just don't use it much. Even I told doctors when they ask if I drink "not enough to even say yes--under 1 use in a few months" so even doctors write down "doesn't drink". I still have vodka from a few years ago. I use it in cooking (not good to drink it with beta blockers Wink ).

Good grief....why?

I'm off to the cannabis thread and may create a Scotch and cigar thread on my way there!
