Hugo Chavez dead?
Anyone else hearing that Chavez is dead? I can't find much outside of Faux news.

He's dead, other sources are now confirming.

I lived in Venezuela for a year and a half before he came to power and a year and half after he did. The guy would go on TV and sing and joke unscripted and all the channels would be airing his craziness. He shut down newspapers, radio and TV stations that criticized him. I hope the Venezuelans elect a democratic President that isn't narcissistic or corrupt this time.

Vote for one they actually want this time you mean? I certainly hope so.

RE: Hugo Chavez dead?
Yep, he's dead. And like any dyed in the wool, true wealth redistributing socialist, he only left his family with a paltry 2 billion dollar estate. But seriously, I'm sure he was only holding on to that fortune to keep greedy capitalist's hands off it. Of course, one can't help but think how much bread that 2 b could have put on the empty shelves of Venezuelan grocery stores.

RE: Hugo Chavez dead?
From Wikipedia:

"In recent years, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, under the direction of President Hugo Chávez, has made leaps in the realm of social development. ... Venezuela has made progress in areas such as health, education, and poverty. ... Venezuela has been able to fix many of its domestic issues. Many of the social policy pursued by Chávez and his administration were jump-started by the Millennium Development Goals, eight goals that Venezuela and 188 other nations agreed to in September 2000.[59] In each of the goals, Venezuela has made improvements, and at this rate, will meet all eight goals by their 2015 deadline.[60]
When the international community agreed to the Millennium Development Goals, each country pledged to use social policy to achieve each of the eight goals. The former President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Ali Abdessalam Treki, stated: “What Venezuela has achieved with regards to the Millennium Development Goals should serve as a model for all other countries."[61]
The country has allocated much of its government spending on social policy. From 1999-2009, 60% of government revenues focused on social programs.[60] Social investment went from 8.4% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 1988 to 18.8% in 2008.[62] Through this social spending, Venezuela has been able to stay on track to reaching the Millennium Development Goals.

Percentage of people and households with income below national poverty line:
1997 - 54.5%
Chavez elected in 1998
2011 - 33.2%

"the government received from 1998 to 2008 around 325 billion USD through oil production and export in general"

Compare to CEO's packages: http://www.forbes.com/lists/2012/12/ceo-..._land.html
and
PM of Singapore: 1.7m USD p/a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabinet_of_Singapore

2 billion for 15 years of improvements. Drop in the ocean.

RE: Hugo Chavez dead?
I think you'll find the whole area (SA) has similar results. I know brazil does.
To base it solely down to this clown is a lie.

It has to do with the growing globalization in SA and these countries ability to exploit their natural resources and sell off shore.
