Is this the sura Islam commonly cites to refer to a gay or transgender person?
In other words, gay & transgender people are to be seen as lewd.

Many constantly say they base all their life and behavioral decisions on the Qur'an yet, this batch of words is completely unrelated to anything in modern life and culture.

This is the book to place on the shelf and state emphatically:
This is a book we used to use but don't anymore because we realized it's crap.

Or practice what a lot of Christians do- cherry pick all of the stuff that is in line with current moral standards and chuck the rest or dismiss it as "those were different times then". Thumbsup

Welcome. I'd love to learn more about how an ex muslim deals with their family and culture after leaving their religion.

Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors.... on Donald J. Trump:

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.

Ibrahim95128,

What I find most concerning about strict Muslims is their obvious prejudice against atheists. I therefore wonder, what is your life like in Lebanon?

Huh

We've always been as critical and skeptical of Islamic claims and origins, as any other religion :

That might actually be a fair compromise and at least get a larger part of the Muslim populations caught up with a more "modern" world.

Then, if christees could all finally discover the 21st century ... we might actually all be able to get along. Wink

It depends, to my family I keep it to myself except for my brother & American cousin, and half-cousing in France who are irreligious.
My friends & acquaintances know that I am an atheist.
And I am open about to activists from the Lebanese #YouStink movement which is demanding basic human rights like career opportunities, end to the garbage crisis, 24/7 electricity, controlling inflation, in fact most of them are irreligious.
My professors know I am atheist.

It's good you aren't isolated. It helps to be able to talk openly about your concerns.

-Gender Equality:
Sura 4 Verse 34:
Men have authority over women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.
Sura 4 Verse 11:
And for you is half of what your wives leave if they have no child. But if they have a child, for you is one fourth of what they leave, after any bequest they [may have] made or debt. And for the wives is one fourth if you leave no child. But if you leave a child, then for them is an eighth of what you leave, after any bequest you [may have] made or debt. And if a man or woman leaves neither ascendants nor descendants but has a brother or a sister, then for each one of them is a sixth. But if they are more than two, they share a third, after any bequest which was made or debt, as long as there is no detriment [caused]. [This is] an ordinance from Allah , and Allah is Knowing and Forbearing.
To summarize it: The daughter receives half the inheritance of her brother.
Sura 33 Verse 59:
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
Sahih Bukhari 6:301:
"I have not seen any one more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious, sensible man could be led astray by some of you."
The women asked: "O Allah's Apostle, what is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said: "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said: "This is the deficiency of your intelligence"... "Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said:"This is the deficiency in your religion."

Muhammad molested Aisha when she was 9.
-Treatment of queer and transgendered folks:
Qur'an 4:16
If two men among you are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. If they repent and amend, Leave them alone; for Allah is Oft-returning, Most Merciful.
-Supression of Freedom of Expression:
Qur'an Sura 33:57-61:
Surely (as for) those who speak evil things of Allah and His Messenger, Allah has cursed them in this world and the here after, and He has prepared for them a chastisement bringing disgrace. And those who speak evil things of the believing men and the believing women without their having earned (it), they are guilty indeed of a false accusation and a manifest sin.
O Prophet! say to your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they let down upon them their over-garments; this will be more proper, that they may be known, and thus they will not be given trouble; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease and the agitators in the city do not desist, We shall most certainly set you over them, then they shall not be your neighbors in it but for a little while;
Cursed: wherever they are found they shall be seized and murdered, a (horrible) murdering.

Sura 5:33:
The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement.
-Sex:
Sura 17:32:
Nor come nigh to fornication/adultery: for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil, opening the road (to other evils).
The penalty for premarital sex is 100 lashes, and for extramarital stoning till death.

Masturbation is sinful and harmful to a person's sexuality according to Islam.
-Discrimination Against Jews & Christians:
Qur'an 9:29:
Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.
-Penalty for the Apostasy:
Qur'an 3:90-91:
Surely, those who disbelieve after their believing, then increase in unbelief, their repentance shall not be accepted, and these are they that go astray. Surely, those who disbelieve and die while they are unbelievers, the earth full of gold shall not be accepted from one of them, though he should offer to ransom himself with it, these it is who shall have a painful chastisement, and they shall have no helpers.

Very interesting read. Glad to have you here and it's nice to get another's perspective. I've studied the Bible and Christianity extensively since that is what predominately ruled my life during my early age. Then as I grew older I studied other major religions to gain more knowledge of why people believe the things they do. Your description of the Qur'an was very informative.

I get to decide what my life looks like, not the other way around.

Congrats! Replace everything Muslim with Conservative, and you've just described Fox News. Rolleyes

Actually you can learn more real things from Al Jazeera than Fox News. I stopped watching Fox seriously almost a decade ago when I thought it could not get worse. I occasionally check it out and it's obvious there is no bottom for this network.
