I am new to this website
Although I have been agnostic for most of my life, I am now atheist. I am conflicted between being polite and challenging the superstitions of others but at the same time I don't want to be constantly in people's faces. I think I need balance. Advice would be welcome.

Welcome.

What exactly is the purpose of challenging them?

1. Do you want deconversion? Then you have to play by their rules, and take it slow and steady. People don't become converted overnight, and they sure as hell won't be deconverted overnight.

2. Do you want to set an example for any bystanders? Goal being not to deconvert the religious person, but to indirectly speak to a person on the side lines who's watching you and the religious going at it.

3. Do you want people to shut up, and not address you with religious mantras?

Note: reality should never take a back seat to "politeness". If something needs addressing, address it.

When you are in love you want to tell the world, and that's what being a new atheist feels like. We all care about humanity and want people to love the world for what it is, and not need supernatural things.

But after a while you realize that those people think it's so real, that even talking to them about it makes them explode with defensive anger. So I'd be careful choose your battles wisely, and enjoy your new out look!

The atheist is a man who destroys the imaginary things which afflict the human race, and so leads men back to nature, to experience and to reason.

TTA is a good place for catharsis.

We have seen many who arrived angry and tempered with time.

Feel free to rant.

Others of us arrived tempered with time and became angry.

So really there's a place for everyone!
