Yesterday I realized for the first time that the word "grey" is also spelled "gray". What the hell? I didn't know this. Someone did this just to confuse me.

I try to look up every word that I misspell so that I will learn how to spell it the next time, but it doesn't work. I am not a natural born speller. It's annoying when my kids can spell better than I can. Once in a while I've asked them how to spell a word or two on a grocery list. Grrrrr.

You just noticed Grey/Gray at this point in your life?

I'd say you've had a several lack of coloring and looking at crayons in your time. What's funny is I keep noticing words like Cray-ons have many ways people say them too. Same goes for Grocery list, some people pronounce it grochery others say grosery.

Language is very weird because if you ask people, several will tell you they view Grey and Gray as slightly different colors.. or that they have a different hue. Commonly grey is seen as more steely and cold and gray is seen as a warmer color... I couldn't tell you why that is though

Laugh out load The funny thing is that I was an art major in College . I have a degree in Theatre Art Design and work with color all day long, you'd think I would notice the two spellings of the word GRAY. But no, not at all. I just don't notice how things are spelled. It's like a dead place in my brain. Both my parents were amazing spellers but I didn't inherit any of this ability. Most of my siblings can spell great but my brother and I are spelling idiots.

Oh well, I'm good at other things.

RE: I can't spell
It's all about Orthographic depth.

English is a language with a "deep" orthography.

Quote:In contrast, in deep (i.e., opaque) orthographies the relationship is less direct, and reader must learn the arbitrary or unusual pronunciations of irregular words. In other words, deep orthographies are writing systems that do not have a one-to-one correspondence between sounds (phonemes) and the letters (graphemes) that represent them.

I believe spelling in English is harder for natives to master, because of the above.

For us who have to learn English as a second language it is sometimes easier, because we are forced to learn how words are written and pronounced in an "automatic" way.

When I was little and I couldn't remember the order of the letters g, h, and t in words like "night", "eight", etc, I pronounced the ending of the word (ght) in its individual sounds (something like "goo hoo too"). It was the only way for me to remember it Laugh out load

The spellings of many words in English reflect their older pronunciations as well as their languages of origin.

I've been laughing out loud now for a good thirty seconds at that comment.

It's and its - I can't keep those two straight. My autocorrect on my phone goes for it's every time, so I just leave it.

Lol. Yup. Thumbsup

Although I don't have a problem with they're, their and there. I know which is which. What I have a problem is hearing vowels in words. I can't distinguish between e's and i's. Sometimes they sound the same to me, in my ears or in my head. I've kinda given up on spelling.
