Tell them that maybe homeschooling would be best for them if they want to censor all information that their kid is exposed to.

RE: I did not see this coming.
My four year old told me that ghosts are real

Me - How do you know?
Her - Because they float around
Me - Have you ever seen them float around?
Her - No
Me - Are ghosts real?
Her - Yes
Me - How do you know?
Her - Because I am smart and brave
Me - Yes you are smart and brave, but how do you know ghosts are real?
Her - Because they float above the windows
Me - Have you ever seen them float above the windows?
Her - No
Me - Are ghosts real?
Her - Yes
Me - How do you know?
Her - Because I am smart and brave
Me - Yes you are smart and brave, but how do you know ghosts are real?
Her - because...

It was actually quite fun and great to see my four year old understanding the need for a "because..." and great that she would listen to me critique her because statement.
She was enjoying the conversation too, it was almost a battle of wits and she likes that stuff.

I also lie to her at times.
Her - Daddy, do you like apples
Me - No
Her - You are lying
Me - How do you know I am lying?
Her - because you are eating an apple.
Me - <tapping cheek with finger> "thinking, thinking", <scratching head> "thinking" <pause> "You are right, i like apples."

Her - Daddy, i don't like dinner
Me - You are lying
Her - How do you know
Me - because you are eating it
Her - I am eating because mummy told me to
Me - <tapping cheek with finger> "thinking, thinking"
Her - <smiling>
Me - My girl's a smart girl!

Good for you for restraining yourself! I agree with what several folks have said, he sounds like a future free thinker. An analytical mind is a joy to see in kids, is it not?

RE: I did not see this coming.
I haven't gotten into too many religious discussions with my five-year-old. She's pretty logical when she's not pissed, and I could probably talk her out of religion in a fairly short order. She occasionally asks me if various things are real. The list always includes things she's heard of but hasn't actually seen:
  • Ghosts
  • Zombies
  • Witches
  • Angels
  • Bears
  • Wolves
I love seeing how those are all lumped in together. She's never asked me if God is real, but she has picked up on the phrase "believing in God". I don't know that she's picked up the concept.

RE: I did not see this coming.
This afternoon Charlie expressed a desire to own a slingshot.

"Those things are dangerous," I said, "David is supposed to have killed a giant with one."

"I've heard that story," says Charlie.

"Where?"

"I don't know. Around."

"If you had to look up that story where would you look?"

Charlie thinks a moment.

"In a book of fables," he says.

I gave him a dollar for getting the right answer.

Some say the world will end in fire
Others say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I side with those who favor fire.
But then ice is also nice
And would suffice.

Yabut, in the fable it was a sling, not a slingshot.

There's a difference?

Others say in ice.

I side with those who favor fire.

There's a difference?

I think a slingshot is what is also known as a catapault. I bought one a few years ago and it was marketed as a slingshot.

A sling is essentially a bit of cloth which you use to throw a stone.

At least that's my understanding of the difference.
