I don't think humanity will survive religion
With technology advancing at the rate it is and with religion hanging on and on, I'm thinking that humanity is doomed by peoples need for god(s). Our brains must be wired in such a way, that a persons own death, is so unthinkable, that delusion is preferred above reason and logic. If we could make it long enough, reason would prevail but I don't see that humanity has the time. Religious nuts just don't have stones to throw anymore. I think that religious nuts will kill humanity off in the name of their bullshit god.

I wonder that with the vastness of the universe and the amount of time its been around, if there's been "intelligent" life in the universe before and it always destroys itself as soon as its' technology allows it to do so.

Wouldn't it be funny if when the religious nuts started hurling nuclear weapons at one another, aliens came down from their spacecraft and saved all the Atheist? I'd love to see the look on Pat Robertson face!

PS: The good news is: I'm getting old enough not to care.

Sorry for the ramble

I contend that no intelligent extraterrestrial would want to visit here.

All they'd have to do is tune in the 6 o'clock news to find out what a bunch of monsters humans can be.

Especially when they've got "permission from the invisible man who lives in the sky"....

Wouldn't it be interesting to be a galactic anthropologist, you could survey multiple civilizations and observe what sociological factors are contributing to the demise of civilizations and how it descends from their evolutionary traits.

I would say that any aliens that are capable of interstellar travel would have very limited compassion for us and our foibles, other than a distant perspective of anthropological curiosity.

They ain't going to save us!

Agreed. They'd start by listening to our early radio broadcasts and as they got closer they'd hear more and more shit. They'd see us as a waste of time and turn around long before they even got to see ISIS cutting peoples heads off. Well... Unless they needed meat. Then they might continue on down.

Exactly this, they would (or perhaps,do ) look at us like we look at chimps on Animal planet. They wouldn't be upset or surprised or disgust by our atrocities simply because they wouldn't expect us to behave any better.

Right. It has to be about religion. It couldn't be the end of the world is pressured by:

*child porn
*proliferation of nukes
*rampant warfare
*gangs and killings and uprisals/reprisals
*totalitarianism
*etc. which are condemned by evangelical Christians--if not by Muslim extremists

My point is it isn't ALL religions just like it's not all about you. If the world was atheist it would be a dull place to live. Consider

I'm told atheists on forums like TTA are bitter and angry. If you are not, your posts to me will be respectful, insightful and thoughtful. Prove me wrong by your adherence to decent behavior.

If the whole world was atheist, IMO there would be:

same amount of porn
less proliferation of nukes
less warfare
less gangs and uprisals
much less totalitarianism

Looks like a move in the right direction to me!

As soon as aliens picked up an old broadcast of The 700 Club, they'd turn around and go back home.

RE: I don't think humanity will survive religion
Change happens slowly. People may be stubborn, but laws are slowly becoming more and more secular. Certain places fighting this change by going in the other direction (to the extreme) is a somewhat predictable outcome, as are clashes with groups like ISIS. Abrahamic religions have proliferated the world over the past couple thousand years, and it might take another thousand for them to get beat down. But the mere fact that they no longer provide a survival advantage to the societies which practices them will ultimately be their downfall.

Step 1: Beat down the "extremists" while encouraging countries to adapt laws that are more secular in nature.
Step 2: Let the "moderates" die out as culture slowly adapts to fit the new environment we face.

Baby steps.

Or if we end up nuking ourselves out of existence before then, so be it. Such is life.

I'd like to think that at some point in the future, the time we are living in now is viewed the same way how we view Greek mythology today.

That's a long shot I know, but it seems the most logical way forward.
