Isn't it supposed to be a mistranslation? Or other copies of the texts have a different number i.e. 616.

It's not really possible to say which is 'proper' and which is 'mistranslation', because the sources for both are pretty much equivalent.

Since the canon was adopted by committee anyway we can probably take 666 as proper. Since that's what won out. Not that it means anything regardless.
